..but not for the occasional or stylish traveler. Probably not for a woman traveler that typically needs to carry more stuff.

I am a million mile frequent flyer and I knew what I wanted in a carry on and am very familiar with Pelican's products. This case is heavier than most and smaller than the typical carry-on most people have these days. Why to I give it 5 stars, because it is indestructible, will last a lifetime and has the bulletproof warranty that you will never need. I do not mind the weight, in fact, I like it because it is so solid. What is lacks in size is no big deal because you can actually sit or stand on it to compress your clothes if need be:). I also love the fact that it is 100% waterproof and I would not hesitate to throw it in the back of a truck in a driving rain with a computer inside. I love that it can be used as a instant seat at the boarding area when there are no seats available. I always fly first/business and those seats near the gate are usually filled before I get there and used to have to stand and wait to board but now, no problem:). A big plus of the smaller size is that it fits in any overhead and allows the bin to close with ease. The case rolls very easily too. It will hold 2 pairs of jeans, shirts, sicks underwear and your laptop or 3 pairs each and no laptop. You can save money without the laptop and clothing liner but I like the liner and recommend it. I generally carry only this case and a back pack and do not ever check a bag. Again, style freaks, junk haulers and most women need not apply, but if you know how to pack light and are serious traveler, this is the most durable case money can buy, bar none.

My first experience with a Pelican case was a smaller version with pick and pluck foam that I use for a gun case. I liked it - a lot - so when it came time to get an 'occasional' case, this seemed to fit the ticket. I needed something that I could take onboard as a carry-on, but that I could also put in checked baggage if I needed to. Most rollaboards are light but flimsy and would suffer a horrible fate at the hands of typical luggage handlers. Not so with the Pelican case. This thing is seriously tough. The neoprene liner is well worth it with the double zips to keep all your personal effects nicely in place, and the utility bag and laptop bag fit perfectly in the lid. They're held in with velcro and when removed, can be stuck to each other, acting as a laptop pouch (but without its own handle).
The Pelican case's toughness is it's biggest plus point, but could also be a big minus if you're not strong. Fully packed with a laptop, power supply, cables and five days of clothes and a wash kit, this thing tips the scales at about 27lbs. That's well within the limit for checked luggage but if you pack it this full, you'll need some heft to get it into the overhead bins onboard.
Is it worth it? Absolutely. Sure it's hefty but that's because of its durability. In the last year, mine's been round the world with me (literally) twice, both onboard and in checked baggage. Whilst idly staring out the window, I actually saw my case fall off the loading conveyor at Dallas DFW a few months ago - probably an 8ft drop to the concrete. Sure it's scuffed but the hinges are in perfect condition, as are the clasps and seals. The handles show no sign of damage or potential detachment.
As one reviewer said, the interior space does seem smaller than you might expect, but pack smartly and it will be no problem.

I bought this case earlier this year and am really happy with the case itself. It looks tough, feels tough, and I trust the construction to keep my stuff secure. The case is heavy, but the handles are in the right place to carry it easily and they're made comfortably as well. After a dozen or so flights my case has gotten a few scuffs, but the important parts (latches, wheels, handles) still work perfectly.

The case holds less than I'd like for the size and weight, but it's big enough for a long weekend trip. I like that the laptop case is removable for more room if I need it. The garment compartment is well made, and stretchy enough to handle overpacking that requires forcing the case shut. It's nice to have my clothes held out of the way of the seal. On the whole though, I'd probably just get the case without the laptop and garment compartments on a second purchase.

The problem is that Pelican-style casses get attention from airline employees and TSA workers. Airline workers think it's either a camera or gun case, and some have told me that I have to check it (although they back down when I tell them it's just a suitcase). I've checked the bag a few times, and found the "TSA was here" inspection tag in my case almost every time afterwards. The two-piece garment bag is a bit of an issue here, as they appear to want to search under it - one time they removed the garment compartment and put it back in backwards, so that the case wouldn't close. I got the various parts back in a tub at baggage claim.

Often, the bag comes out at the 'special services' counter because the baggage workers thought it was a gun box.

Overall, I'm really happy with this case, but there are a few complications using this as a general piece of luggage.
