it worked. The process was a bit daunting. The "easy, quick" method shown in videos didn't work; I guess my model was "the difficult one" with the hinge screws a few millimeters lower, requiring me to follow the "long" dis-assembly steps. But with effort, I got it apart - it just took a good dose of patience. I'm glad i did a minimal "loose" reassembly and ran a test, because it didn't work. I took it apart again and redid all the connections, and retested. It worked. A great feeling of accomplishment. I'm thinking I hadn't properly connected the ribbon cable on the back of the screen. (Glad I'm NOT a surgeon.) I completed the re-assembly and tightened it up. An unexpected by-product was the opportunity to clean out all the accumulated dirt/dust around the fan and keyboard. For $65 and a few hours of time I had a working PC and I gained a bunch of knowledge about PC's. All very worthwhile. The other choices were pay Geek Squad more than double the amount or spend even wa-a-ay more on a new PC. Two months later it's still working great. The hint to use a firm guitar pick to separate the case was especially helpful. Having an assortment of small screwdrivers helps -- especially with a magnetic tip to hold the screws when re-assembling. To keep track of which screw went where, I drew a few rough pictures on pieces of paper and would tape the screws down on the diagrams and labeled them with increasing numbers them as I removed them. That way I counted down during reassembly and they all went back in the right holes in the right sequence.

UPDATE: 8/2014. Still working great!!! No problems.
