A slim and comfortable bag, compact in size but with room for all the essentials

I have bought a ridiculous number of backpacks, messenger bags, and attache cases over the years, searching for that perfect blend of light weight, compact size, roominess and comfort. With the STM Aero, I think I found it. Before you run right out and buy one, though, let me tell you a little more about what I was looking for, how I use the bag, and what it might not be so great for.

I'm an old man and technically retired, but I still keep very busy writing, teaching, and designing and building websites for friends and my own projects. I have three primary work tools - a 13" Retina MacBook Pro; an iPad mini, with keyboard case; and one or two note-pads, with a pencil pouch containing pencils and pens of various sorts and colors. I need a case that holds all those comfortably, with room for power supply, a few cables, screen cleaning cloth, and occasional other small gear. Because I'm an old man, I've given up on shoulder bags and messenger bags, because they put all the weight on one shoulder, and both of my old shoulders complain when they're forced to carry the whole load. And attache cases are hard to deal with on a bike or a moderately long walk.

So I want a backpack. But the backpack has its own requirements. It has to be comfortable, with padded shoulder straps and a sternum strap to hold it close to my body. It has to have a top handle, so that I can carry it conveniently over short distances. And I don't want a belly strap, because the straps hang down when I'm toting the bag by the handle and get tangled in stuff. And it has to be compact; I walk a lot, ride a bike, and use public transit, and I hate backpacks that stick way out.

Nice backpack, but bad stitching

Overall, the form of the pack was great.

Able to fit my Lenovo Thinkpad X230 (12.5 inches), the power brick, a small pouch of cables and other accessories, and some other random doodads. That's pretty much everything that can go into it, but I knew that beforehand, and it was expected.

The stitching on the front, however, is horrible. After less than 2 months of use, the top and the bottom portion (where the zipper starts and ends) basically just snapped. Had to burn the ends to prevent the stitches from unraveling further.

Initially, I thought this was purely aesthetic. However, upon further inspection, it appears that the stitches reach into the bag, and actually hold the inner pockets together. Coins and other small items can now fall into the main compartment if I stick them into the small front pockets.

This bag is perfect for those who want to carry a 13 inch laptop, but it needs to be about 1cm taller. The bag needs to be manually pulled over the corners of a 13 inch Macbook Air. Once the backpack stretches a bit, it may be perfect.

Black bag (WEIRDLY) has less functionality than the the red one (and is more expensive)

So I bought the red version of this bag a month ago and loved it (and would give it 5 stars). The bag is compact and light and carries all my essentials (macbook air, DSLR camera, phone, cords, kindle, water bottle, umbrella). I used it every single day and it was so much better for my shoulder than the camera bag and lighter than the bulky laptop bag that I used to use.

Then a month later, I gave it to my sister and got the same bag in black. However, in the month that passed between buying the two bags, the price of the red one (which had initially been $10 more than the black) dropped and now the black one was more expensive (by $15 more than what I had paid before). Basically I bought the more expensive bag each time I bought it.

That's annoying enough, but there are 2 structural differences that I can't understand why STM would have implemented (or not implemented as the case may be) - for the same exact bag, but different colours - which is why I'm downgrading my star rating to 3 stars.

First, the outside front zippered pocket "for phone and sunglasses" doesn't have the interior nylon pockets (that the red bag had) that keep these items from banging into each other. Why skimp on a piece of nylon (that isn't fleece lined anyway)?

Second, the black bag is missing two reflector strips that the red bag had - on the shoulder straps (that would be visible from the front when wearing it), and on the front of the bag (a long vertical strip that would be visible from the back when wearing the bag). The photo of the black bag actually shows this missing strip - where is it?

Also - no reward tag came with the black bag (as did with the red) - again something that's advertised but missing.Read more ›

This is an excellent bag.

I needed a bag that would carry my everyday items. The number of items increase with age I find.
This bag is just what I need to haul my glasses, wallet, diary, umbrella, work ID, iPad, and if I need it, my 13" laptop (unlikely though and I use the compartment for loose papers).
It is not a bag to take a weekend's worth of clothes and toiletries plus all the nick-knacks but it does suite for an everyday carry about bag.
I am really pleased with it.
