Ativ, usually noted in all caps (ATIV) is not an acronym, but “vita” (life) spelled backwards and is the trademark used by Samsung for all of its Windows 8 tablets and laptops. The ATIV Book 9 is a compact, high-end laptop computer powered by Intel’s newest, thinnest processor, the Core m, used because it provides desktop PC performance and HD graphics, yet runs cool. The Book 9 is designed to be a portable computer, very thin, light, fast and powerful, but at the same time sturdy and energy efficient -- not generating enough heat to even require a fan.

In order to meet these goals, first rate components and materials are used throughout. For example, storage is provided by a 256 GB solid state disk (SSD), also known as flash storage, which contains all electronic memory and no moving parts, making it much faster, quieter, cooler and more dependable than a spinning disk, but also more expensive. The laptop’s chassis is solid aluminum so it is strong and light and helps dissipate heat. The matte finish is classy and repels but does not completely eliminate fingerprints.

Opening the lid reveals an unbelievably sharp and color-saturated LED screen, a product of the Intel HD Graphics 5300 capability built into the processor, and the WQXGA (Wide Quad Extended Graphics Array) with a resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels at a 16:10 aspect ratio.

The Book 9 is excellent for viewing high definition movies, games, sports and television. The screen is so sharp that it exposes the weaknesses in lower quality content. For example, the low definition commercials on YouTube and MLB.com look even worse than usual – grainy and fuzzy, particularly when followed by clear HD videos. NOT NOW - My Thought Process...

The laptop is thin and light but compared to the other Book 9 devices its slow, has no back lit keypad, its not really that much thinner, the battery is weak and overall costs about the same price!
I do actually like the device but currently at this price point is not even close to worth it.

I get that the M processor doesn't need a Fan and runs cooler but my Book 9's never had any heating issues and were whisper quite so why buy this model if I'm going to cut my processing speed in half!? According to a mainstream Benchmark website this processor scores around 2000 compared to my Book 9 i7 at 3800.
The battery gets 5 or so hours maybe more with power saver mode but my Book 9 gets 9.
My 9 weights about 1 lb more but in the grand scheme of things 1 lb is nothing! Older ultra-books and laptops weighed 4 to 5 lbs!

If the price was close to other M processor ultrabook around $500 I might jump at the chance but you can get a better overall experience with a 2 in 1 Tablet/Keyboard setup like the Asus T300 CHI or simply another REAL ultrabook like the Dell XPS 13 or the Samsung NP940/NP900 or Asus Zenbook or Acer R7.

I wrote this simply to show my thought processes while deciding what lightweight laptop to recommend for my ends users. Hopefully it will shed some light on the reasons this laptop isn't worth its premium price.
Of course if money is no issue and your buying purely based on asthetics I would check out other M processor laptops like the Asus UX305 before you pull the trigger.

Windows 8.1 Laptop in a Thin and Lightweight Chassis - 4.5 Stars

This is a super slim/sleek laptop (.46" thick!) which is wonderful for travel & carrying around every day. It is beautiful & really lightweight. The all-aluminum body design is not showy, looks professional & seems quite sturdy. It has a matte finish so doesn't show fingerprints. This is a Windows 8.1 laptop - NOT a tablet. It does not have a touchscreen & it does not come apart/convert to a tablet. Since it does not have a touchscreen, it is technically not an "ultrabook".

Connection Options:
-2 USB 3.0 ports - one on each side
-1 Micro-HDMI port
-1 microSD Card Slot -This is on the bottom of the laptop, near the edge, on the right side - easy to miss.
-Combo Headphone/Microphone Combo Jack

Other points:
-AC Power Supply is Small & Easy to Pack - noticeably smaller than most laptop power supplies.
-Runs Really Cool & Silent - does not need (or even have) a fan to keep it cool! Minimal heat buildup when you are using in your lap. It did warm up a bit when I was installing software & downloading apps for a few hours. But when using it for normal everyday surfing/working; it stays cool.
-Comfortable Keyboard, for its size - I do not have large hands but my husband's hands are larger & he also thought it was comfortable. We had no problem using this keyboard. The Shift & Enter keys are slightly smaller than the old versions of this laptop but we did not find that to be a problem.
-The Large Touchpad worked well/fast response. Read the Quick Start Guide for details, but the right click is done by pressing (until you feel a click) on the lower right hand side of the track pad.
