Quick for a 5400 rpm drive, but so-so value proposition

NOTE: As sometimes happens, Amazon and third party sellers seem to have combined several different products under one listing. The product reviewed is part of the STBD1000x series and is 5400 rpm. The newer Momentus XT is 7200 rpm. See comments for details.

Seagate's hybrid STBD1000400 drive is both priced and positioned rather oddly for the drive market. It is about $40 more expensive than comparable 1 TB laptop drives, only slightly less expensive than far faster 256 GB SSD drives, and doesn't really have enough cache to really take advantage of its nominal hybrid functionality. If you're really looking for a single hard drive for a laptop and are on a strict budget, this isn't a great choice, but it's not awful either.

Intel hit upon the hybrid concept a couple years back for desktops with their Smart Response Technology, where you could combine a small SSD drive with a mechanical drive and reap the benefits of both size and speed for frequently accessed data. (Back in those days, a small SSD made far more sense economically; even a 256 GB SSD was price prohibitive.) With less space for drives, laptops are a bit different; you're frequently stuck with a single drive, and so it makes sense for a drive manufacturer to create a hybrid drive.

Unfortunately, with 8 GB of SSD cache, this does one thing and only one thing well, which is to access and write smaller amounts of data - as in, starting up programs. Realistically, you'd need somewhere between 32-64 GB of SSD capacity to really notice sustained transfer speed improvement along with fairly sophisticated disk management software to keep frequently accessed programs in the SSD cache.Read more ›

ჯ Unlike some previous Seagate Momentus XT drives that combine flash memory caching with a 7200-RPM drive, this drive spins at 5400-RPM.
ჯ In order to provide a robust speed boost that improves all usage scenarios, the SSD caching really needs to be increased to at least 24-GB or 32-GB in size, especially if you frequently work with graphics/photo/video/multimedia files.
ჯ Even though it uses a 5400-RPM hard drive, this Seagate SSHD consumes almost as much energy as some regular 7200-RPM hard drives, or about 40% to 80% more energy than some of the better energy-efficient 5400-RPM mobile hard drives on the market.
ჯ While this drive does noticeably improve the boot time during a cold boot, the speed-up when waking up from hibernation mode is only slightly quicker.

MAJOR speed increase on 2009 MacBook Pro

I installed this 1TB drive in a MacBook Pro, 13 inch, 2.26 GHz from 2009. This unit replaced the original 160 GB hard drive.

I'm *very* pleased with the speed increase; it was better than I expected given that this laptop is already 4 years old. I ran some quick performance tests before and after, with the following results:

Power-on to login screen:
Before: 76 seconds
After: 28 seconds

Submit login to rendered Mac OS desktop:
Before: 16.7 seconds
After: Under 5 seconds

Launch Excel and render chart:
Before: 13.4 seconds
After: Under 5 seconds

Installation was easy and trouble-free; I'm extremely happy with the results!

Better than expected.

I expected this drive to work, of course, but I did not expect it to be so quiet. It has been my experience that Seagate drives are the most robust and dependable, but the reliability has typically come at the expense of noise levels higher than that of comparable drives. As an owner of the 500GB WD Blue 2.5" drive (which is quieter than a whisper) I didn't expect this drive to be as quiet but I decided to give it a shot anyway because I needed one in a pinch and couldn't get another WD model on such short notice. To my surprise, this drive is just as quiet as the WD model. Seagate has apparently made great strides in this department. It is my understanding that the WD model consumes slightly less energy than this drive does, but we are not talking about a large difference and I do trust Seagate reliability more than WD at the end of the day. So, in summation this seems to be a great 500GB 2.5" drive. If something changes down the road I will return and amend my review as I always do when new information arises.

warranty woes

Super fast
