Why this:
Got it as a replacement for an old WD 500gb 5400rpm that came in the laptop after it failed. Worked just fine from the beginning, windows re-installed without a hitch, and the performance is much better than the drive it replaced. Of course, its not nearly the performance of a SSD, but at the time of purchase, a 500 GB SSD was 4-5 times the price.

For the first 5 months of using this drive in a Dell Precision laptop, it worked great. Then I started noticing sluggish performance. At first I thought it was a fragmented drive or the virus scan, but that was not the case. At month 7, Windows started telling me that the drive was failing. It was especially noticeable when swapping large files with virtual memory. Using Seagate's SeaTools test tool, I confirmed that the SMART test and Short DST test failed. This is my third Seagate laptop drive to fail in the past 2 years.

Style Name: 7200rpmSize: 500 GB Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
This is a slim hard drive suitable for computers where space is at a premium, such as thin laptops. As a 2.5" drive, it will fit in standard laptop hard drive slots, 2.5" external drive enclosures, or desktop computers with mounting hardware for 2.5" drives. But since this drive is only 7mm thick, it can be squeezed into a really tight hard drive enclosure, making it ideal for really slim laptops. The 500GB capacity should be enough for most general users, and the 7200 RPM speed means you won't be sitting twiddling your thumbs waiting for your programs to load. The 32 Mb cache also helps make this drive plenty zippy.

The drive arrives brand new, unformatted. In order to use it, you're going to need to install it and format it. If this will be your new primary drive, you can physically install it in your computer (just unscrew the hard drive enclosure and match up the plugs. Really--it won't hurt anything as long as you keep your fingers away from the electronics). Then you will need your operating System disks (good luck with that, since they don't ship them anymore). If you are lucky enough to have such disks, plop them in the CD drive, and they will guide you through the installation process.

If this is going to be a secondary disk, the process is a bit easier, since you can format the disk from a computer that already has a functioning operating system. To start, physically install the disk either in a secondary disk enclosure or a 2.5" external drive enclosure. Once the drive is physically hooked up to a computer with an operating system, you need to format it. Formatting is a bit like telling the disk what size pages and lines you want for your notebook, how much space between the lines and all.

This drive is very quiet and seems to run just as smooth as any drive that comes with a brand new PS3. I seem to notice a little bit of a faster load time (by seconds, nothing too major but definitely helpful overall) in all things including boot up, going into the PSN store and games loading from the HDD or running with install data from a disc. Some might say the PS3 doesn't work any faster than what is accepted by the system, but the double cache size does make a noticable difference to me. I used to be a Western Digital fan until I had 3 of their laptop drives die after 3 years of use. I understand that electronics and computer components do not last forever but 3 years or less is not acceptable. I have PC hard drives that lasted 5 or more years before starting to show signs of problems. The WD drives all became useless and had more bad sectors than the drive could handle in less than 3 years. I decided to make a change to Seagate due to the technology of the data access that the Momentus offers and due to the low price offered for the features. If you are looking for a fast, high capacity drive for your PS3 then look no further. And if you can get this drive through a Warehouse deal with a "Like New" status then save the extra few bucks and buy it, you'll be glad you did.

Style Name: 7200rpmSize: 500 GB Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
This hard disk drive (HDD) was used to replace the one in my Dell computer because it uses a new twice as fast SATA interface and it has a much larger cache buffer (32 vs. 8 MB). First step -- I used the Windows Image Backup (Control Panel / System and Security / File History / System Image Backup) to create an image of the internal HDD. Then I created a bootable recovery disk on a thumb drive (Control Panel / System and Security / File History / Recovery / Create a Recovery Drive).

After shutting down the laptop, I unplugged it and removed the battery, took the back off, removed the HDD, replaced it with the new one, and put everything back together. Then, I inserted the recovery thumb drive in a USB port, turned the computer on and pressed F12 (for Dell machines.)

After trying to figure out which drive to use I selected "removable storage" and it found the thumb drive automatically. Once it booted from the thumb drive, I connected the external HDD before selecting an item from the menu that appeared after booting. After that, Windows found the most recent image and then prompted to copy it. I pressed enter, and the image copied to the new HDD and the machine rebooted. When it finished, everything looked identical to the way it appeared before.

I copied several large video files from the old HDD to the external drive before switching to the new one. I noticed that they averaged a copying speed of about 20 Mb per second. Afterwards, I copied them back and forth and noted that they now averaged over 30 Mb per second, more than a 50% increase. The new drive has been in use for about two weeks, and overall system performance is noticeably snappier. Battery life is about the same as before, and the new hard disk is quieter than the original and has not caused any noticeable problems, such as overheating, vibration, etc. Impressed.
