I purchased this device to replace my Surface Pro 2. I like the Surface Pro, but my son needed a computer, and I decided I should get to try a new toy, not him. So he gets my old device.

This computer looked very sexy at the store where I purchased it. It is very thin, light, and has a good solid feel to it. In the store, it really looks nice. However, once you get it home and try to use it, a few design flaws become apparent, and then quickly grow to be annoying.

Firstly, The kickstand is very thin, and lines up with the gap between your legs, which makes it useless as a "laptop." I have grown accustomed to the Surface's wide kickstand that allows me to balance the computer easily on my lap. The Tap 11's kickstand works great on a table or desk, but is absolutely useless on your lap.

The screen and keyboard do not connect in any way. Meaning that you cannot use the keyboard to support the screen on your lap either. More importantly, and seemingly very odd to me, the keyboard charges from the screen. However, you can only charge the keyboard if the computer itself is asleep.

Thus, if your keyboard runs out of power, you are out of luck. You cannot attach it, and use phantom power from the screen to continue typing. Instead, you have to put the keyboard cover over the screen, and stop working for a few hours. Why they thought that was a good idea, is beyond me.

I don't hate this device, but I also don't love it.
It could have been a really solid contender, perhaps even a step up from a Surface. But these seemingly small design flaws make it useless for many common functions.

I will say this though. As a tablet, it is phenomenal.

Bought it at Best Buy when they had a special one day sale for $499. I had also been looking at the Asus Transformer book T100, Dell Venue 8 Pro, and various Surface Pro & surface Pro 2 tablets. But for the price, and what you get (tablet, keyboard & digitizing stylus) I was willing to overlook factors such as battery life and not having the latest Core i processor. For what I wanted, it's more than adequate, and will replace my first gen iPad, which is hobbled by Apple's policies. I spent a long time trying to get my iPad to do, which the Sony Vaio Tap 11 simply does. For example, work with Microsoft Office Docs (which iPad didn't do until recently)and easily work with web sites containing flash content (several browsers do offer a workaround, such as Puffin). The iPad also suffers from a need to reload previous web pages in the browser when using tabbed browsing, and the worst thing of all was Apples lack of support when it comes to updating iOS on a device I had for only 3 years (Microsoft supports their OS for a decade or more). Because I could no longer update iOS, I can't get some newer apps, update existing apps, and worse, some apps simply stop working and I can't get the updates. But I digress...

To enhance the capabilities of the Vaio Tap 11 tablet, I threw in a 64 GB micro SDXC card, and bought an external optical drive. I'm using this to both replace my iPad, as well as my old laptop. I suspect that over time, I'll have less and less a need for the optical drive, but I did need it to install some existing software.

One word of caution. Be careful when you do the updates to Windows 8.1 update 1, as you have to do all of Sony's updates first.

Verified Purchase
I have had the Sony Vaio Tap 11 for 3 weeks. I have found very little to complain about. If you are looking for something that can compete with the Microsoft Surface for not quite so much money I feel like this is just the thing.
The screen is a very nice size and the weight is easy to carry. The kick stand is only an inch wide but it has a rubber tip so it doesn't slip or uncomfortably dig into your leg if you prop it on your lap. The kick stand will go from from flush to the device to a 90 degree angle and will stay in place at every angle in between. The screen is as smooth as butter and has just the right touch sensitivity. The keyboard completely detaches from the device and wirelessly communicates with the tablet. When you're not using the tablet the keyboard attaches magnetically as a cover to the screen and it stays snugly, when the keyboard was connected I shook it vigorously all which ways (over my bed) and nothing budged. The Tap 11 also comes with a pen and it works marvelously, it's a beautiful thing if you like making handwritten notes. I don't know if the on screen keyboard is Windows 8 programming or Sony programming but it does a very good job of translating handwriting to typed text.
My only suggestion is if your Tap 11 does not come loaded with Windows 8.1 make sure to have all your Sony drivers updated before getting the 8.1 update. To update the drivers just go to the Sony website and look up your Model # which can be found under the kickstand, and they will provide a list of all available updates.
