With the mad dash of Back-To-School time, new packs were needed for our twin 3rd graders. My hubs has 2 Swiss Gear items, a laptop bag and larger backpack, that have both been knocked around and used heavily. Both of those items have taken the abuse, and held up considerably. Going down the rabbit hole of choices for the twins, between LL Bean, Pottery Barn cha-ching, Jansport, etc, led me back to a tried and true basic: Swiss Gear. Finding a pricepoint that was under $30 was key, but quality also had to be factored in. After reading the reviews on this bag, these seemed like a sensible choice for our needs. We ordered 1 red, and 1 blue.

As for the size of these, the packs surpassed my expectations (as have read other reviews that said the pack was way too small.) I did try our laptop (Toshiba, 14") to see if it fit....it does, but the pocket is a bit small and awkward to pull the laptop in/out. But it does fit. However, our purchase was not for that purpose. I packed the following items into 1 pack, as to give y'all an idea of the actual roominess of it. 1 pair of sneakers, 1 fleece jacket, 1 lunchbox, 4 folders, 2 larger books (like text book size), a full pencil bag, a small umbrella, and a water bottle. That all fits, with room to spare. There are 3 main pockets in this bag. The first pocket is the front vertical zipper, that has an area that would house a child's fleece. The second pocket is where the key fob is, and has a few netted and nylon pockets for this and that...the 2 larger books and 4 folders were easily added to that section. The main compartment, where the laptop should go, is roomy enough to accommodate the other items I listed above. Again with room to spare.Read more ›

Not safe for my laptop!

I purchased this bag mainly because it was lightweight and I loved the looks of it. When I got the bag I noticed that it was a little smaller than I expected it to be, but that was fine I can deal with it. The real problem is that the laptop pocket cuts very short, leaving about 40% of my 13" Macbook Retina exposed. The most that I have seen exposed on any bag is about 15% of the computer. There is also no strap or anything holding the computer in there, so computer is free to bounce around as it wishes. I could see most of the books coming in contact with the computer and leaving scuff marks with time. The material around the laptop compartment is also kind of thin, I really don't think it offers much protection. But I guess thats what I get for looking for the lightest possible backpack.

Overall it is a good looking product, but if you cherish your computer as much as I do, you really would not want to put it in there. SwissGear makes excellent products, it is a shame that they did not put more work in the laptop compartment in this one. I ended up returning it and buying a case logic bag, hopefully that one is much better than this one.

So the Case Logic DLBP-116 16-Inch Laptop Backpack (Black) came in, and it is everything I was looking for and more. While the compartment of the laptop still does not have a strap to keep the computer in, it does however hide the entire laptop in the pocket (nothing exposed). It also seems well padded. The bag also feels much more expensive and offers multiple zippered pockets. I am very happy with this bag!

I have had a Swiss Gear backpack in the past so I knew what to expect. These backpacks are absolutely amazing from the air flow back and straps to allow more breathability. It's got a built in pencil and accessories pouch and a big enough space in the back pouch for a laptop or his tablet. Thanks, Amazon!

Just as expected, and just what I wanted

First Off: This backpack will NOT hold anything bigger than a 10 inch tablet/netbook in the pouch. This size will be fully concealed in the pocket when placed horizontal, but placed vertically, or when placing something bigger than 10 inches into the pocket, will be exposed to the other area of the backpack.

There is a good 1-2 inch space between the bottom of the laptop pouch area and the bottom of the backpack. I was ecstatic for this seemingly obscure element. It means my tablet won't slam on the ground if I put the backpack down, since its buffed by the pouch, as well as the distance between the very edge/bottom of the backpack. THANK YOU! I've had bags that don't do this, and I've cringed when I know my laptop received a harder landing than expected.

That said, this was meant to protect my 10 inch tablet, and its perfect for it. Great amount of space in the compartments, and more than enough room for books, accessories, tablet, and a bit more. Vibrant color, and overall great quality.

I'm totally confused by the claims by other reviewers that their laptops don't fit. My Toshiba 15" fits perfectly and with space to spare (but not too much.) It's sturdy, slings over your shoulder well, has great pockets and more. My last laptop bag was a Targus and this is just as good.
