Stay away! You've been warned!

As the IT Supervisor for a company that supports over 400 field reps, I've had the need to order a large number of car chargers. As quick as these Targus devices are handed out, they're returned for a replacement.

The biggest issue is with the front end of the adapter breaking off in the car's lighter receptacle. It seems that it overheats and the glue that holds the tip on separates from the unit. This is not a one off occurrence. Of the batch of 60 I ordered, I'm sure I've received no less than 20 back from my field reps already and they're still coming in. YOU'VE BEEN WARNED!

Terrible

This thing is worthless. The little tips always fall off, and are easy to lose. The one I use is already cracking and breaking down the middle, and I've had it for a month. Plus it doesn't always charge correctly even when its all in one piece.

Just get a normal charger.

Works well, Targus will send one tip for free, free shipping on others

Pros:

1) When I called Targus they provided one additional tip at no cost, and provided a discount code for free shipping on additional tips USPS or a discount on second-day shipping.

2) The optional U302 adapter provides the second ("mobile device") connection with a standard female USB connector, which allows the use of an standard USB cable for supported device (ex: my HTC Evo 4G and my wife's MP3 player) - you only need this one adapter for various supported additional devices (one at a time, along with the laptop) and you can provide you own, longer cable.

Cons:

1) No support listed for Motion Computer devices.

2) The "adapter" portion sits about 5" from the primary device (laptop/netbook/tablet), and AFAIK there is no extension cable available to allow the primary device to sit further from the "adapter".

Terrible experience with Targus charger

I bought this charger as a replacement for my ASUS charger that shorted out. At the time it was the only one I could find, but I liked the idea of charging my phone and computer at the same time.
At first, it was fine. The pin fit securely, it charged my computer, I was happy.
A couple days after purchasing I attempted to redeem my code for a free tip for my cell phone. The Targus.com website is virtually impossible to navigate and gave me errors when I finally did manage to find the correct tip. I tried on a different computer with a different browser with the same results, so I know it wasn't that.
About two months down the road (long enough I could no long return it to the store and had lost most of the packaging) the tip started to come loose sometimes while charging. It wasn't a big deal, but the problem has gotten worse and worse. If my laptop gets moved even slightly the charger falls out. I expect some normal wear and tear, but after less than 6 months I wasn't expecting this.
Great idea, poorly executed. Save your money and just buy a cheap laptop charger and a cheap phone charger.

Very compact and capable 12v Laptop/Accessory charger for car or aircraft

This works great for charging a laptop and simultaneously something like a cell phone in car or on aircraft with cigarette style in seat power outlets. Also works great for emPower in seat power (e.g., United) with the Targus emPower to Cigarette adapter. Charged my Toshiba M750 tablet and Blackberry successfully in car and in the air. Great accessory with the Targus universal laptop power adapter to enable you to go in-car or AC outlet. http://www.amazon.com/Targus-Premium-Laptop-Charger-APM69US/dp/B002UAUZQW/ref=cm_cr_pr_sims_t . I like the total Targus system so much that I've switched over to it from iGo, the total setup is more compact and easier to use, i.e., you only need this DC device in car, you only need the AC device in the office/hotel, and you only need the DC device plus emPower (in some cases) when in the air. To be prepared for any eventuality, you need three parts - this Mobile DC Laptop Charger, the unversal AC adapter, and the emPower to Cigarette adapter, plus whatever "free" tips ($5 shipping) you need for your cell or other device. Good stuff, but if you want the full setup is a bit cheaper to by the combination of the AC/DC adapters together in one of the Targus SKUs.

Breaks easily

I like the adapter - and the fact that I can use it with multiple devices. However as mentioned by others, the DC plug into the car breaks very easily. I bought two of these, and both broke very quickly. The RMA process from Targus was no fun and took about 3 weeks overall. My replacements broke as well, and I have not bothered with trying to RMA a second time.

If targus had put about $.02 more of plastic into the tip to reinforce it better (and use better glue) the tip would be much more solid and worry free. As it is - take your chances on this. Expect that it is going to break.

I bought two of these. One, I bought for myself, and the other to sell. The one I kept for myself works beautifully, charging both my laptop, and my phone at the same time.
This is not a complaint, but do be aware that it doesn't charge as fast as an AC charger will. When you're down to the last 20% of charge, and still have more work to do, you'll be thankful you have this item in your car to charge your laptop, or tablet on the way to your next meeting.
