I bought this from a store. After one of my tips stopped working, I came here to read reviews. I heard that this product sometimes stops working, so I figured the tips were wearing out. But what I just discovered is that inside the tips, there are two metal prongs that are used to conduct electricity from the tip to the electrical input prong inside the power cord hole on my laptop. With repeated use, these prongs can be pushed against the plastic sides of the tip, leaving space between the prongs in the tip and the prong in the hole. I used a needle to bend the prongs inside the tip to push them towards the center more. This immediately worked, and the electrical conduction was reconnected. I think this trick would work for other tips that don't fit as well, and making it so they will work despite the incorrect fit. I hope this helps others who may have an issue with this charger.

I picked this up at an office superstore while on vacation because I left my laptop charger at home. The user manual was short and straightforward, and I had no problem choosing the right adapter plug for my one year old Acer laptop. The Targus web site also has an extensive compatability application to help you choose which adapter plug to use for your laptop (links are in the manual or just go to Targus.com and browse around). The charger with adapter plug seems to be sturdy and well constructed and worked flawlessly for me for the week I needed it. The power brick stayed cool and was completely silent as it should be. One thing I like about this universal laptop charger is that the adapter plugs are keyed so they can only attach to the DC power supply cord one way, thus eliminating the possibility of reversing the polarity by accident and potentially frying your laptop. This may be a common feature of more recent universal laptop chargers, but some older units I considered required you to determine the correct polarity, thus introducing the potential for accidentally using the incorrect polarity. The Targus charger also does not have a manual adjustment for the output voltage, but adjusts automatically, again reducing the potential for human error.

This recharger self-destructed almost exactly 1 month to the date I got it. So guess what no refund!
Started smoking and would not work afterward. I am just glad it did not cause damage to my computer.
Would not recommend it.

Pro's: It was a very good price. It arrived even a litter quicker than expected.
Con's: Although I have used this brand 'Targus' before with excellent results; this model just wasn't up to par.
-The other model (which cost about $20 more); came in a hard case with each piece separated into its own distinct groove so that each connecting tip could be removed & replaced securely.
This made this model very easy & user friendly to use, especially if you have more than 1 device.
-THIS PARTICULAR MODEL however, came in a single small makeup bag size, nylon black pouch. The connector tips were placed at random in a medium, 'small cookie' lunch bag sized, clear pouch.
-In addition, the tips were poorly labeled, so that you could never quite figure out the correct size quickly. (I'd found out later that each tip was lightly embossed with a letter however, it was too faint & far too small to read unless you are extremely near sighted (like me) or have used of a lighted magnifying glass).
-For my Dell Inspirion N5110 laptop, the 1 tip that was a perfect fit, NEVER DID WORK!
The other 2 addition tips that worked, only worked briefly. The next best fitting tip kept on shorting out & I'd stopped using it because I was afraid it might permanently damage My laptop.
The remaining 3rd tip was just so loose fitting, tHat it could only be used with a piece of tape before it too shorted out.
-In conclusion, 1 star for prompt delivery service, 2 stars because, knowing other Targus models have performed so well; I won't boycott the brand but, this particular model IS AWFUL !

So far no complaints about this charger, but the image is incorrect. The charger I received, Targus NO: APA31US Item No: 60 has a 3 pronged cord instead of 2 the prong pictured.

It also has NO LIGHT on the box.

I contacted Targus out of concern that this might be a copycat, but after sending pictures they confirmed that the one I received is a genuine item and that the model was made to these specifications.

Personally, I prefer the differences, but I think everyone would appreciate the correct image up there so we know what we're buying.

The charger worked for four months then stopped charging. It only endured normal use and was not abused by any means. The light on the pack still comes on but no juice. I have also verified that other chargers still work on the laptop and have checked the charger for obvious nicks, bends, creases, or any other obvious damage that might cause a short. The charger itself wasn't even being handled when it quit charging suggesting it likely had a faulty or weak component that failed. It is also very unlikely that a surge caused it.

I contacted the seller and was told I was out of the return window. I asked if the issue was common but got no answer.

Unfortunately, this item is too expensive to merely let slide with a four month life-span with a mere 'sorry, try again next time'. I've had laptop chargers that have lasted me years using them in the same situation. And when your charger dies during an important study night in school or in a rural area where you're relying on it it's a very upsetting circumstance. It's one of those things that just has to work.
