Sturdy pack with good interior design; for light use, not everyday heavy loads

This is a good light-duty backpack. It has enough room for a good four-inch stack of homework or business work, a single padded laptop slot that handles my 13" Lenovo with room to spare, and three separate areas for chargers, gadgets, etc. Like all Targus packs, the space is well thought through for handling the stuff you're likely to carry for school or business. The material is heavy duty, the stitching is even, the zippers are good quality, and overall construction is what I'd expect from Targus.

On the downside, the straps are thinner and not as well padded as on my preferred backpacks. And the back, while padded, doesn't have a mesh cover of the type that's become fairly standard on more expensive packs. The combination of these two factors means that I wouldn't use this backpack every day for carrying heavier loads or for longer durations. Also, the pack has just one device slot, for a laptop -- a second padded area for a tablet would have been nice. The storm flap around the zipper is a nice touch if you'll be walking in the rain, but it also makes it more cumbersome to zip the pack open and shut in everyday use. One upside of the lighter construction is that the pack is quite lightweight.

The bottom line is that this case offers good value and quality for it's price. In fact, a bit more quality than I expected at this price. But I wouldn't use it to carry heavy loads for long periods on a daily basis. It's destined to become my "side trip" pack -- something to use when I want a light pack to carry some but not all of the stuff in my regular pack (e.g., for weekend trips).

Good option for the price

This is a really good value for a solid laptop backpack. You can get higher quality ones at a higher price, but for this price point its a very solid option

Relative to other similar items:

Pros:
- Price is great

Other positives (that are typical of many products in the category):
- generous padded laptop compartment
- good quality nylon exterior and high quality zippers
- nice styling - looks good
- comfortable adjustable straps
- decent number of compartments and pockets for pens, cards, paperwork etc

Cons:
- Where they seem to save the cost and bring the price down is the interior... unlike the high quality exterior material, the interior feels a bit "cheap" -- the laptop compartment is fine and padded, but its sort of a low grade nylon for the pockets and such that I expect might wear poorly over time

Well built basic laptop backpack

The first things I noticed is how lightweight the Targus Trek Backpack is, and the good quality of its assembling. It has all the basic compartments to carry the essential things one might need for school or work. However, I was a little disappointed of discovering that the bottom of the backpack doesn't have a strong padding or a solid foundation, but when I touched the inside of the cushioned laptop compartment I noticed that it's built like a big pocket, and it's enclosed inside the backpack by itself, so it has its own base inside but separated from the backpack's base.

The padding is enough to protect the laptop from a drop and to keep it static while carrying it around. Too much stirring can affect some components like the hard drive or the battery pack. I had customers walking in with a laptop with a faulty hard drive to soon discover with a close inspection, that the hard drive moved out of place with too much movement. This will not be a problem with the Targus Trek Backpack, because a 16" laptop is a perfect fit inside of it. Outside of the laptop compartment there is enough space to put the charger cord, books and even a change of clothes for an sleep over. The padded shoulder straps are a nice plus. I also like the front and side zippered pockets. The one in front has a few nice divisions to keep handy a few items like pens, calculator, Smartphone and even a small tablet.

Functional, nothing special

This is a fine, practical backpack that serves its purpose. There is nothing special or unique about it. The colors are pleasing and the backpack looks neither cheap nor expensive. In my opinion the logo/tags with the big yellow "Targus" do cheapen the product a bit, and stand in contrast to my sleek Apple laptop ;-)

There is a moderately padded pocket for the laptop though it is just padded on the sides and not on the bottom. That part would be against your back; on top of that (or on the side facing out) is another pocket that would be big enough to accommodate some notebooks or thinner texts (or maybe one thick textbook). You would not be able to carry your laptop *and* a couple of thick textbooks and a lunch, for example.

In the outer pocket, where you see the Targus logo, is a smaller mesh pocket, another pocket with a velcro and 3 wallet type-credit card pockets. This material is much cheaper (think Halloween costumes from the 70s, the ones that came with a cape and plastic mask) and 2 of the wallet pockets are so shallow (literally about 1.5" deep) that they would be useless. I can't think of what I could hold in there.

For a slim backpack, this is pretty roomy. It is also not overwhelming in size so this would work for petite or medium-framed users.
