The Targus 90 W AC Laptop Charger with USB Fast Charging Port APA32US fits a real niche. If you're a laptop owner, as I am, you appreciate being able to actually move your laptop around, including room to room, with the minimum of bother. For me, this meant investing in a second power source last year. Climbing under my desk to disengage the charger every time I wanted to carry the laptop to another room was not back-friendly.

As it happens, I'm serious about moving my laptop around as whim or weather or direction of sunlight or family activity directs. I was keeping my original charger in my office while moving around with the new one, which has a slightly shorter cord. When I saw the Targus recharger I snapped it up. It offers a level of versatility my other chargers didn't. And as it turns out, the cord is much longer than my previously purchased backup charger.

Obviously, I can plug USB devices directly into a port on my laptop but this can be inconvenient depending on where and how I am sitting. I much prefer plugging the device into the Targus charging port where it's out of the way rather than dangling off the side of my laptop. If I'm sitting at a table I don't even notice it's there. The laptop charger is also small and light, which makes hauling it from room to room less of a chore.

I really can't think of anything negative to say about this package. The fact that you can use it on more than one model of laptop is a real bonus if you have multiple laptop brands in your home. The connectors fit firmly into the socket and I've yet to have it slip out when jostled or moved. I highly recommend this product!

Update (12.6.11): I found out today that this power brick killed my ASUS laptop. Apparently it was putting out 22.5 instead of the required 19.

Got this device yesterday and works well so far with our approx. 2 year old laptop.

If you are a highly 'mobile' user, and by that I mean if you move around a lot even in one place, on a bed, on a desk, or whatever, the whole inter-changeable tip things might be both a blessing and a curse. The tips have a decent amount of friction fit, but they are not cam-locked or some other form of positive lock to keep them from coming out if you give the cord a good yank. On the plus side, like Apple's MagSafe, the tip SHOULD give if you get your leg caught up and keep you from pulling your precious electronics onto the floor. Cable length is good at probably 6-7 feet plug to plug.

I gave the device 2 stars however because the ad listing does NOT disclose that this item is shipped as a BULK item. It did come in a sealed plastic baggy, along with the tips in a plastic enclosure and a travel bag that all appear to be original, though there is no way to tell for certain. There is no OEM packaging and NO instructions. I had to test fit plugs to find the right one and then hope that the power wasn't reversed. I haven't yet looked at Targus' website for instructions, I'm sure they are there as I know they have a configurator I used to insure this was compatible with our laptop.

Would buy the device again, just not from this vendor.

It's a good idea to have a back-up charger. I keep my laptops a long time, and it's not uncommon for the charger to die (or get lost) while the laptop has some life left in it. If you've ever been without one and depend on your laptop, you'll know what it means to be without one. I've had it happen on a few occasions when my friends or office mates have one go down on them. It's nice to be able to bail them out--which you can, with this universal unit.

I've used this Targus with a Dell laptop and an Acer netbook, both of which have different power requirements. Works fine on both. The unit itself is small--about 2/3 the size of my Dell original power supply. It will supply up to 90 watts, which is a LOT. That will handle almost any notebook. My original Dell power supply also supplied 90 watts. I've used the Targus overseas with 240 v too; it's rated from 100-240v. Has a bright blue light to let you know that it's running. The tips exchange easily, and fit snuggly. I can't speak for its durability yet, but the cord is solid, and there's nothing flimsy about this unit.

The USB power source can be detached, so you can use the power supply with or without it. Almost all laptops have USB ports to charge things on. Now you have one more USB connection--for charging things only, not for hooking into your laptop's USB capabilities.

The plug is two-pronged, meaning it's not grounded. Not a problem with my Acer, which has 2 prongs on its original plug. But with my Dell, the original charger is grounded (3-pronged plug). When I use the Targus on my Dell, I feel a very slight electric buzz when my palms first rest on the laptop. Once they are on there--no buzz. Not a deal-breaker, but enough to knock a star off, along with the fact that it doesn't come with a car adapter.

I just received this charger and, after reading other reviews have some of the same comments.
It is a bulk product, not one that comes in 'official' Targus packaging. All the parts were the same and the charger, cables and tips all looked new but there were not instructions included and the 'handy carry bag' was an inexpensive cloth bag. Fortunately I have several cases, bags, etc. that will work for this charger all of which are better quality. Since it was not mentioned in the information for the product, I've knocked 2 stars off the rating.
I did not have a problem with identifying which tip was which, the embossing was clear to me. I looked at this charger at Staples and saw which tip was used for my ASUS laptop but I doublechecked on the Targus website.
I too don't care much for the USB dongle but it was not difficult to put on and I'll leave it on.
I took a volt meter and measured the output voltage with the correct ASUS tip and found it was 19.5 volts, just as advertised so I'm not expecting any problems with overcharging. The ASUS model I have #X53E# stops charging at 95% anyway.
When assembled the cables are longer than the ASUS OEM charger and this will be handy for travelling. I'll use the OEM charger for home so I don't have to remove it. Besides, having a spare is a good idea, as far as I'm concerned.
