Cheap, all plastic cooling pad that works nicely after some mods

I picked this up from my local Frys to pair with my i7 quad core HP Envy 15.6" laptop.

Pros:
- Size - The size is perfect for my laptop
- Front bumpers to secure the front of the laptop (no sliding off). Can be folded down into stand if not needed
- Rear legs to raise the height (2 levels). Can fold them into the case if you don't need them
- Adjustable Fan speed dial
- Ability to turn off blue LED
- 2 140mm fans
- Fairly quiet at lowest speed setting, but not completely silent
- Looks nice
- USB powered
- 1 free USB port to make use of the one you lost powering this

Cons:
- Fans hit the power cables (inside the case) when weight is put on the surface (i.e. laptop). Needs a mod to fix
- All plastic - For the price, you can't expect a lot. However, a metal grill would be nice for those with aluminum case laptops
- Not completely silent

If it weren't for the fan mod I had to do, I would have given this 4 stars because I really like it now that I fixed the problem. Thermaltake ran the power cables under each fan in a plastic channel that sticks up several millimeters. Since the case is all plastic, it bows when you put weight on it. In retrospect, this may only be an issue for those that use the rear legs because it gives the body more of a change to bow under weight. My laptop is about 5.5 lbs, so it's by no means a massive beast of a laptop. I ended up having to take the cooler apart and drill holes at the base of each fan to run the cables outside of the case along the bottom several inches and then two more holes to run the cables back in once they cleared the fans.Read more ›

Very Nice Cooler for the Money

I am very pleased with this cooler. It comes well packaged and includes a usb cable to power the unit. The cable I received is about 12" long. The cooler is the perfect size for my Toshiba Satellite A665 laptop. With the fan setting on high I can definitely hear them but I slowed them down with the control on the side of the cooler to about 50-60% and I don't even notice them. After a little testing I found that about 35% fan speed is all I need to keep my laptop in a very cool state. So now they are basically silent. I keep the blue lights turned off as they add nothing to the performance. My laptop so perfectly fits the size of the cooler pad I wouldn't really notice them anyway.

To address some of the comments in other reviews regarding the construction of the unit I have to say it is actually better constructed than I was expecting. Yes it's plastic but I do not feel the unit suffers because of it. If you intend to use this sitting on your lap then it very well could allow too much flex and may cause some issues such as the fans rubbing against the case. But I have it sitting flat on my desk and powered through a USB hub connected to my docking station. It works beautifully this way and have noticed zero issues with the performance thus far.

I always review products with the price of the item at the forefront of my process. If this was say a forty-five dollar cooler then I would have to be more critical of the material choices the manufacturer made but at less than twenty-five dollars it easily surpasses my expectations and I would certainly recommend it for someone using it in a similar fashion to myself.Read more ›

Great and works nicely

I picked this one up from Fry's, it works nicely. Easy to figure out how to install and keeps my laptop cool even after gaming for hours with my Alienware M17x. If you're not too bothered by it being made of plastic, then you'll be fine... Then again... these are not built so that you'll pay too much for it. I'd say Thermaltake did a great job maximizing this item's function and build for its price. And if you really want to complain more about this item being made of plastic, then go research something more expensive that may not even work as well but is built of platinum or gold. Anyway... with my own opinion, this deserves a 5/5 start for its price, functionality, and even aesthetics! Works great with gaming laptop especially if they glow lights like Alienwares! =)

Does an excellent job of keeping my Laptop from Overheating

I've been using it for about 3 weeks now, and I've been pretty satisfied with it. Before using this, I had my laptop sitting on top of a grill I grabbed out of a microwave oven. It would overheat about 2-3 times a day while I was watching live streams on Twitch or videos on Youtube. Since having this cooling pad, my laptop hasn't once overheated.

The cooling pad is powered via your laptop's USB. Luckily, it has a second USB port on it to make up for taking one of your laptop's ports. You can adjust the speed of the fans with the dial located on the left side of the pad, so you can properly set the fan speed depending on how heavy of a workload you're giving your laptop. This uses 2 large fans instead of many smaller ones, so it's pretty quiet even on full speed. The LED light is kind of neat, it can be turned off if you don't wish to have it on. On the end of the cooling pad are 2 plastic pieces that you can flip up to hold your laptop in place on the pad, and to ensure that the fans are cooling the proper areas.

Overall, I'd say this was a good buy. The only Con I can think of is when I'm running the CPU to it's limit, the laptop's fan will occasionally kick up to max speed (Which is much, much, louder compared to the pad's fans) for a few minutes, then go back to being quiet.
