Wonderful return to productivity!

This is a repeat of my review of the only W550s on Amazon, but since then the Amazon vendor has provided many more choices. This product is the proper place to post this review, given that mine is the touch-screen model.

I think the touch-screen is very useful when the Ultranav driver takes a little break. Sometimes the Ultranav driver pauses for about 30 seconds and then rejoins the living without fanfare. I'm addicted to the Ultranav, but the touch-screen makes for relaxing reading--just point and drag up the page. You can do it with your arm extended and relaxed on the table, using your thumb to drag upward.

Here's the review I posted previously:

Second only to my Canon 70-200 L IS f/2.8 lens, which is the best piece of electronic equipment I've ever owned, this is a close second.

I've had Thinkpads since the first black & white version a long time ago. Usually every three years I get a new one. My wife has also followed suit over the years as well and she loves her X1 Carbon Touch 1st Gen.

Previous machine: touchscreen W510, which I had for 4.5 years! Huge 135w power supply was no picnic, especially when traveling.

I just got a 16 GB i7-5600U W550s touch-screen in March and my IT folks put in a 1TB SSD. All I can say is wow! Over the years the keyboards had deteriorated steadily but the TrackPoints improved (except last year when they were temporarily insane with a dumb design). Then the keyboards got a little better in the late 1990s.

This one is a pure joy! So smooth and solid! Best keyboard I've ever used. I used to think the screen was a little glary, but that impression did not last long. It is extremely sharp and clear. I wish there was an option to insert another 1 TB SSD or two.Read more ›

Workbook / ultra-book hybrid that works well

From an IT professional, programmer, 3D modeler / game designer hobbyist, this is one of the best laptops that I've ever owned or used. Over the years I've used many laptops for my job and personal hobbies. The keyboard is solid, and all the other features and qualities have the best mix of ultra-book and workbook.

What surprises me the most are the screen hinges. The other 4 Lenovo laptops that I've owned / used (and one I still have) have very bouncy displays. When they even sense that you're about to touch the screen they freak out, not to mention typing on them is rather annoying. Perhaps that's their more ultra-book nature. Typing on this machine is incredibly solid. I will be gifting my last bouncy Lenovo to a friend, and never buying another 'ultra-book' or previous gen workbook as long as they keep this design (and it holds up).

Of course there are all the obvious reasons to choose this laptop: Amazing and replaceable battery life (3 cell internal / 3-6 cell external up to 72Wh), number-pad, ports and dock expansion, responsive and large track-pad, lightweight and thin design for the hardware and size, screen purchase options (1080p, 3k, 3k touch)
