My household is chock full o' Timbuk2 stuff. Messenger bags, totes, camera inserts, mobile phone pouches, and more. While we all appreciate Timbuk2's burly construction and lifetime warranty on its products, pretty much every item has something that could have been done better. Usually it's a small detail, such as Velcro hooks on a flap facing towards clothing (better to have the pile side that way to avoid knit fabrics getting caught up) but sometimes it's a major problem like a rucksack that won't close properly unless it's fully loaded.

This time it's different, as the saying goes. The Command Laptop Backpack has been thoughtfully designed all the way through. It is truly a joy to wear and use. Every pocket, slot, buckle, and strap has been well thought out and elegantly blends form and function.

I have the Carbon Full-Cycle Twill color/fabric choice. This grey colored woven fabric gives the Command a soft, pleasant hand with a professional looking texture. And grey, of course, is a color that works well in pretty much all office, school, and travel situations. Overall, the Command has a nicely understated and minimalist look to it.

The most amazing thing about the design to my mind is that even though the Command is a 32-liter volume pack, it looks and feels like a much smaller pack. When it's not fully loaded and the bottom compression straps are pulled in, it feels, in both size and weight, almost like carrying a 20-liter daypack. Very nice. The other great feature is the TSA-compliant laptop compartment. When you're at an airport security checkpoint, all you have to do is flip the shoulder straps over to the front of the pack and open a zippered flap to expose your computer to TSA screeners.

This bag is expensive. But I love it. Before I bought it, I was worried it will look very bulky. After using it, I realized when I don't have much (I carry a Mac Pro and other small things) to put in, it still looks slim. However, you can also expand it when you need more space. The quality is really good, and material seems to be sturdy.

This backpack is surprisingly roomy for its exterior size. I like the rectangular shape. It holds its shape so that everything doesn't fall into the bottom. As others have noted, it will fall over it you set it down on its bottom. I have tried a lot of different backpacks for work travel and so far I like this one the best. My last one had lots of small pockets for cords and devices. My wife hated it because she could never find anything. This one has a few smaller pockets. I like the middle sized pocket on the outside that houses cords. A few smaller pockets are in the compartments, with some zipped. I like the butterfly compartment for the laptop so I don't have to take my laptop out for TSA. I dont't think it's a big deal to move the shoulder straps to the other side of the bag, open the laptop compartment. I think there is adequate cushioning for the laptop and a pocket next to it for my Ipad. There is a fairly large compartment next for papers and binder. A smaller one on top of it that had room my my glass cases, camera case, Bose headphones case and some other things. It packs a lot and that leads to one major downsize. It can get heavy, and the straps are just plain inadequate. The shoulder straps don't have enough padding and they dug into my shoulder capsule and became uncomfortable. I tried the chest strap to pull the straps off my shoulder capsule. But that didn't help much. The fabric straps on the top and size are too thin and dug into my fingers. They are ok to pull the bag out of an overhead bin, or hold it like a briefcase while you are walking down the aisle of an airplane. Minus one star for the straps. For storage, being TSA friendly and organization, it's a 5..

Update: I changed the review to two stars, because someone replied to my review whining about how I was an idiot for not liking this product. The only reason I would suspect that someone would reply like that is that they work for Timbuk2 and possibly is on their design team and they got their ego hurt. So there, here's an extra star for what this looks like. I said it was great design looking. Feel better, Matthew?

This is the worst designed back pack ever for a laptop backpack. I was replacing my incase backpack, and this one had a great design and look. When I got it, I opened up both sets of zippers, no padding or laptop pocket. Then, I realized that there was zippers on the back side of it BEHIND the backpack straps. I thought how bad is a design is that, until I realized it got worse! You have to put the laptop into the SIDE of the back pack and can't just drop it in. It's practically impossible to put the laptop in or out. This would annoy me to no end, and I only take my laptop back and forth to work. And forget about slipping it in and out quickly at the airport! Are you kidding me? It's such great looking back pack! It is much heavier than my incase laptop back pack, but I would've gotten over that. Absolutely inconvenient in practicality and functionality. Also, the zippers did not slide smoothly either, like cheap zippers.
