Great backpack for travel, school, gear, anyhting

Absolutely love this backpack, of all the packs I've owned over the years (and I do my research before buying one thoroughly) I have to say that this is my favorite by far. Timbuk2 has made an awesome all around backpack.

I travel frequently and use it everyday going to class and back, as well as riding my street bike and it fits great. Has some good reflective material on it as well that helps it to stick out while riding/walking at night. After several months of use, 7 days a week and several trips with it stuffed to the seams, it still looks and feels brand new. It can fit my MacBook Pro Retina 13" perfectly with a protective sleeve on for more protection. Inside main compartment can hold several notebooks, folders and a book or two just fine, and has convenient organization pockets inside for pens/loose smaller items. Outside zipper pockets are genius and perfect from holding everything from extra battery packs/chargers, Mac charging cable + extension, bike tire pump + 17 part multi-tool, glasses, etc. Loops on the outside allow you to use a carabiner to attach more junk to the outside and the straps used for this are thick and well attached and can take some weight. Same goes for the shoulder straps, great construction overall w/ removable chest buckle + bottle opener as per Timbuk2.

One thing I would say could use an improvement on this bag would be the side water bottle elastic carrier. It still works fine (with my KOR Vida bottle), but sometimes I worry about it popping out as it's not a very deep pocket.

Overall, highly recommend this backpack for just about anything you could use it for.

It's a great backpack. There are plenty of pockets for everything you may want to bring to class, and the laptop portion fits my 15.6 inch laptop like a glove. It is comfortable to wear, and will hold more textbooks than I expected it to.

Sleek design for this model. Personally I don't like to pack an umbrella so with its water proof design it helps protect the electronics I carry. The only knock on this backpack is the size. But I consider this a small travel backpack something for everyday use.

Awesome backpack for students.

Happy to have discovered the Timbuk2 brand and the Showdown backpack. I use it for school (I'm a senior in college) and it's everything I need. I carry a Surface Pro, 3 heavy textbooks, a 1" binder, tons of pens, pencils, stapler, scientific calculator, a sweater, cosmetics, keys, phone, a small wallet, lunch and a 40 oz water bottle in this backpack and it handles it all without feeling like a heavy load. The shoulder straps are very sturdy and reinforced across the back of the bag so that it distributes the weight in a way that takes the strain off of my shoulders and back. I've used many backpacks over the years and they all fell short in this area because I'm hard to fit (5'4" and wear a 34DDD). The front sternum strap is fully adjustable up/down so I'm able to get a perfect comfortable fit versus other backpacks that I couldn't move the sternum strap from fastening across my breasts which was horribly uncomfortable and hello, weird-looking.
All of the above is in addition to the features that seem standard to backpacks, front pockets and an organization panel, etc.
Something that I would call out is that it has an awesome "floating shelf" in the laptop compartment that in my case, my Surface Pro sits on. The shelf sits a couple inches above the bottom of the backpack so that it holds my Surface Pro up higher than the bottom of the bag. It creates a space below that protects it from impact when I set the bag down on the bottom. I love and appreciate this small detail so much.
The only other thing that I would mention is that this bag is fairly structured compared to your average wide-open cavity type of backpack so it's not really "stuffable".Read more ›

A medium-sized backpack that does everything well

This bag strikes the perfect balance between carrying a laptop and carrying books and other things for a medium sized backpack. I have been considering this bag and the STM impulse bag for a while now. It seems to me that the Impulse has a huge amount of padding for protecting the laptop, while the secondary pocket for books will be a bit cramped. The secondary pocket on this bag is fairly large. It can easily fit two large textbooks with no problem, or a stack of exam papers if you are shuttling them between the classroom and the office. The three pockets at the front of the bag are very useful - the long one I use for AC adapters and phone chargers, and the fleece-lined small one for the phone and wallet. I was concerned about the safety of putting something valuable in those pockets, but the zippers on this bag are not the smooth and silent types - they make a fairly loud sound and need a bit of pull to open, so if someone behind me is trying to open them, I would be able to hear and feel easily.

The bag looks more narrow than the typical backpack and that is true. I personally like it. If you are trying to carry three binders in the middle pocket then forget it. Two should fit if you stack them right. The different colored versions actually use different fabrics. The green one uses a faux leather material for the three front pockets, which does not match the material for the rest of the bag. The black version uses nylon materials throughout and is the one I settled on.

I am surprised that in all of the reviews, no one brought up the issue with the laptop padding. The front and back of that compartment are more than sufficiently padded, but the sides are not.Read more ›
