Great Laptop For the Money

I like this laptop a lot. I admit I paid a lot less than $279 and that's part of the appeal, but it compares well to laptops over $300.

I bought a cheap AMD based laptop that almost ruined my faith in AMD. If you are in the market for a budget laptop avoid the AMD E1-6010 at all costs. I was able to get rid of the laptop with the AMD E1-6010 and decided that I needed to do a little more research. After reviewing laptop CPU reviews I noticed another model, the AMD A8-6410 compared well to Intel Core i3 processors, even some i5's. I found this Toshiba at a really good price and took another chance with AMD. I'm glad I did. This is a very good budget laptop with very little to complain about other than the terrible "tinny" speakers.

If you buy this laptop don't be disappointed by the initial performance. With Windows 8 and the factory installed software you'll experience lag. If you open the task manager you'll notice nearly 100% disk usage almost all of the time. I didn't bother figuring out which program in particular was causing this because there's a lot of unnecessary bloatware that can be eliminated with a simple upgrade to Windows 10. Don't waste your time installing any of your own programs, do the upgrade to Windows 10 first. When you upgrade select "keep nothing" when you get the option of what to keep from your settings and apps. You'll have a bloatware free, clean version of Windows 10 and the laptop will perform very well. All of the drivers you need are on Toshiba's website, but only install what you really need. A lot of the Toshiba software "is" bloatware. After upgrading to 10, the only driver you will really need to install from the Toshiba website is the Elan touchpad drivers (to get your touchpad working again).Read more ›

Slower Than Expected

This computer would be an outstanding value in this price range if it were not for the hard drive. Granted, it is only a 5400 rpm drive, but I have never seen a 5400 rpm hard drive perform so slowly. The computer seemed unusually slow, so I investigated CPU usage expecting it to be maxed out; but to my surprise, it was the hard drive at 100%. Even viewing a web page causes the hard drive to show 100% usage. I'm considering swapping the hard drive for an SSD; otherwise, I'll be returning it.

Mid-range performance, not upgradable

Word of warning: the memory (RAM) can not be upgraded. It is "factory installed" only. The only way to upgrade is to send it back to Toshiba USA.
