Very Nice Budget Laptop for Everyday Use.

I wanted to get in a positive review in to offset the negative ones.

I ordered the laptop on a Friday & chose Saturday Delivery. It showed up at my door at 12:02 PM.

I let the unit reach room temperature (very cold in northeast) for a couple hours and proceeded with the un-boxing. This is actually my first NEW laptop in over a decade so the un-boxing was most pleasurable :)

I plugged it in and let it get a full charge which took a couple more hours. I then began the initial setup. There is a bunch of bloatware onboard, but that comes with any new PC product unless you build it yourself. All I did was uninstall what I didn't want, and went from there. The main one was to remove the trial anti-virus and re-enable Window Defender (my preference).

Here are my individual ratings that gave me an overall of 4:
Design - 4 (The case is matte so the finger & handprints show up dark)
Speed - 5 (What can you say about the new i5)
Options - 4 (Removed all the bloatware)
Battery - 5 (The 1st charged lasted >8 hours during setup and cleaning).
OS - 4 (I actually like Windows 8.1 and can't wait for 10)
Display - 4 (So far I love it)
Size - 4 (I didn't do a lot of research on the dimensions so was surprised that it is definitely BIG)

I hope this review helps others in choosing a laptop.

Best laptop for the money

This is by far the best laptop I have tried in my search for a new computer. As always there are pros and cons;

Pros:
-New 5th gen i5 processor is very fast, nothing has bogged it down yet
-8GB RAM, sweet! my computer will still be useful in 3 years!!!
-Bluetooth works flawlessly
-Keyboard is well designed and the keys are big enough I dont find myself mashing 2 buttons at the same time
-Textured mouse pad is very accurate and easy to use
-Aesthetics are great, the matte black laptop looks awesome.
-Battery is pretty good, 4- 6 hours a charge depending on what I am running.

Cons:
-Screen is reflective, although having just returned an HP ENVY and Lenovo this screen is not as bad.
-The shell material shows every finger print. It wipes off, but in between wipe downs it will look used.
-The speakers are pretty poor for music, but with bluetooth that's not a huge issue.

Overall this is easily the best computer for the money. I searched high and low for an 8GB ram with i5 or better processor for under $550 (not refurbished) and this fit my needs perfectly. The only thing I will add is an anti glare screen cover so that I can use this outside.

Notice I did not mention Windows 8.1. The many flaws of the current release are expected to be fixed with free updates to windows 10 in the coming months

Great product much nicer build quality than the old accer we had. Specs say it all its fast, Intel Core i5-5200U Processor
8 GB RAM, 1 TB 5400 rpm Hard Drive it has handled all work productivity needs and then some. It's light at 4.8 lbs but not Mac air light but for a pc laptop is a good weight. Screen resolution is good its nice for watching movies and video its not HD at 1366X768 so if Your looking for a serious Graphics, Photo/Video editing laptop I would look at something else. As for gaming I can't say as I am not big on gaming on laptops, but since it has only a intel integrated graphics card its probably not going to g what you would want out of the box.

It has a built in optical drive (DVD) which was one thing we were looking for since a lot of the newer laptop models are coming without them but as cheap as the LG/Samsung USB portable optical drives are that's not a huge issue. The keyboard is one of the nicer ones I have used and I think the trackpad is by far the best out of the accer, HP and Dell units I had used. It tracks well and isn't overly sensitive or sluggish.

This is a highly recommended product from Toshiba I wanted to get this on here as their are some negative reviews but that has not been my experience thus far and couldn't be happier with this laptop.

Had a really great Satellite before this

Battery on a single charge lasted a measly 2.5 hours. The fan is loud, the bottom gets hot (on a flat surface). Not sure if there is something wrong with the battery, but I am returning it. Had a really great Satellite before this, so am pretty disappointed with this one.

Thank you for the review, Kitkat, and sorry that you seem to be having overheating issues with your Satellite C55.

The battery will have the normal charge/recharge life of lithium ion batteries, which can vary based on use.

Laptops, in general, do tend to get warm or even what some might consider hot, depending on the resource demands of the applications in use. It can generally be expected when running very CPU or graphics intensive applications. However, since you're also reporting unusually loud fan noise it may be that your laptop is running hotter than usual. If it is uncomfortably hot to the touch then I recommend calling support at 800-457-7777 to have your concern addressed and, if needed, make repair arrangements.

As others have said, you should expect issues with the touch-pad, with wi-fi, with sound, and with speed. I completely regret buying this laptop. It's slow, I have issues with the audio input working (at times it's like I never put my headphones in and I have to restart it for the input to work...), the speakers are atrocious, sometimes for audio to work I have to restart the laptop, the wi-fi can be spotty, and at times this thing, at a few months old mind you (got it in February) the thing is as slow as the 6 year old laptop it *replaced*. Far too slow. If Toshiba *really* wanted to help us instead of writing these comments they'd just give us our money back and stop selling this thing until they fix the considerable and seemingly prevalent problems which plague these laptops.
