Price Drop on Decent Machines

This is an excellent machine for the current price of under three hundred dollars. Thinking of someone who just wants a basic machine for web browsing and common computer tasks (I'm thinking of my mother here), they included all the things I would have included, and I understand where and why they made their cuts.

It is thinner and lighter weight than most entry models, and while it doesn't look like a three thousand dollar machine, it is sleeker than I expected. I like the full keyboard with number pad and basic touchpad. The HDMI port allows watching full HD videos on your TV as applicable, while the included monitor is roughly (the computer version of) 720p.

There are three USB ports, but only one is USB 3.0 (on the front of the right side). So get used to using that one for removable drives, and leave any permanent low-bandwidth devices in the others.. The SD card slot (front of machine) is not spring-loaded, so you just shove it in there, and it sticks out halfway, so don't intend to store one in there permanently.

I don't want to lose myself pontificating about Windows 10, but we can all thank God MS isn't sticking with the Win8 atrocity. Windows 10 still really wants to control your life like Google and Apple, pushing things on you that you never wanted and trying to get you to sign up for all kinds of crap that will track you, control your life, and make it "clickably" easy to spend money, but through the control panel (which does still exist if you search for it) and the phone-style settings, you can turn everything off and make it more or less tolerable. It is still sort of the two operating systems in one thing, but at least it's mostly back to normal (I still sort of miss Win7, which was so nice).Read more ›

I have never seen a laptop with this large of a screen size, thin of a case and Windows 10 for this price point. I was skeptical from the beginning.

When you receive the box for this thing, you'll be amazed at how thin it is. This is a lot of laptop (screen size), and often when computer companies build a big laptop like this, they're also a little thick. This one is nice & thin, with a big screen, for what I consider to be a pretty low price.

Unboxing was easy, and I didn't require the instructions to get it plugged in and turned on. Upon turn on and accepting the licenses, I got it on wifi easily and it downloaded some updates. The majority of the Windows 10 install was done, with only a few finishing touches after I booted it up.

There are a few things that make it shy of a 5 star performance/value. The screen contrast is a little high. No matter how dim I made the screen, the colors were a tiny bit washed out for me. On the touchpad I kept hitting the edge of the touchpad rather than the buttons. If you choose not to use the buttons and just double tap the touchpad, it knocks with a little bit of a hollow sound.

Set up was easy, the computer runs acceptably fast and would make a great desktop replacement, especially if you don't have a lot to spend. The case and housing are made of what feels like high quality materials, and the touchpad has a nice texture on it like I've seen on some Lenovo Thinkpads. The keyboard was totally fine for me and didn't have any negative feedback. This is my first Toshiba, and I have to say that I am impressed.

Lightweight budget laptop offers good value for the money

This is a modest laptop from Toshiba at a modest price. For typical office usage, this performs well. I use it as a dedicated office solution, for email, browsing, Microsoft Excel spreadsheets, Quickbooks and similar programs, this is a fine option. The Celeron line of processors are slower, use less power and cost less. We have much more costly and powerful computers but for these tasks, the Toshiba Satellite appears no different. The 15.6” screen display looks sharp and bright. It comes with Windows 10, a DVD drive and 90 days of free support.

It also comes with 4GB of RAM, which is pretty decent, the 500GB hard drive is also good for this size and price point. With cloud storage virtually everywhere, disk size isn’t as important to some as it used to be. Connectivity options include the 802.11b/g/n wireless, 10/100Mbps Ethernet, Bluetooth 4.0, 1 x USB 3.0 port, 2 x USB 2.0 ports, DVD-SuperMulti Optical Drive, an HDMI / VGA output, Media Card Reader, Microphone input / Headphone output, so you can connect to a variety of peripherals including printers, speakers and mouse(mice?) easily.

If you need speed and power for video editing or gaming, this is not for you. The keyboard is really good, it’s comfortable to type on, The laptop itself is quite light, weighing only 4.85 pounds. The battery life is good, it went a full day on a single charge with moderate use and I was watching training videos over wi-fi, so the battery life was a little better than I expected. Wi-fi just worked fine, connecting as needed, but seemed to be a little weak and didn’t get as strong of a signal in some places.

The build is a little ‘plasticly’ but at this price point, that’s the trade off.Read more ›
