It's a perfect "light-duty" computer.

We bought it for home office/back-up machine.
We don't need to carry it around like a tablet, and keyboard is a must for long e-mails.
Getting used to Windows 8.1 was confusing at first.
But after downloading a free word-processor from Apache (OpenOffice), we were good to go.
For WiFi, 3 walls and 1 floor away from router antennas, I get 4 bars out of 5.

For off-hours, we use it for Skype, Netflix and web browsing.
With Celeron N2840 (2.16Ghz)'s rather weak processing power and integrated graphics, I'm not even going to try games like Bioshock Infinite.
Skype is smooth.
Netflix movies are smooth...as long as you don't fiddle with other apps/programs.
Playing a Netflix movie takes about 40-55% of processing power of Celeron N2840.
Opening task manager or even other folders would make the processor usage jump to 100% and flash player will be jerky for a moment.
(Intel Core i7 would use only 5-10% for watching movies, in comparison)
On the other hand, writing a report while playing Youtube music videos in the background is perfectly doable.

And Please Toshiba, hire somebody who can name your products!
Our neighbor had told me about $250 Toshiba.
When I looked up, there were half a dozen laptops in that range with confusing array of names.
I went to Best Buy but I returned home even more confused (but I did remember "something-5300").
After more research, I still got confused and bought C55-B5300 instead of intended C55-A5300.
By dumb luck, "B5300" happened to be better than "A5300" at the same price range.

This is a great basic laptop that has performed well for what it was bought for: school work, Skype, email, browsing, and very light gaming. I would not consider this a gaming computer. It does not have the video and processing power to effectively run very complex games. We have played some simple Steam type games and it has done well with those.

The laptop is priced well, and performs better than expected. Toshiba builds a good product... this is our third one bought and we are happy with it. Just don't expect a gaming computer at this price.

Notes:
- Most new laptops are easy to setup and this one is no exception. From the box to ready to use was about 15 minutes for us.
- Photos are of right side ports (not shown in product photos) and information screen to show processor information.

Great Purchase for the Price! I am extremely happy with the laptop I've purchased, it really works well for a person who isn't really into high tech things. It's a simple computer, and the software platform is not as difficult as some comments suggested. Laptop came with Windows 8.1 installed, and lots of Apps. You can add Apps free or to purchase. Laptop comes with DVD/CD player, which is nice, and SD Card port, and 3 USB ports. Laptop comes with power cord, and is basically out the box ready to use, which is extremely nice.
I would recommend this item to someone looking to purchase a laptop that will do simple projects, allow for video and music playing, and internet/email use as well as camera....(oh yeah, comes with built-in camera and mic).

I'm still adjusting to Windows 8 after having used Windows 7 for as long as possible, but this computer is very easy to use. The Satellite series has had major revamps since my previous computer. I'm especially pleased with the top row of keys on the keyboard - adjusting the brightness, sound, and even pressing pause is as simple as the stroke of a key! I would certainly recommend this computer to a friend, providing they aren't a Macbook snob.

Mouse pad stopped working in a week, so the only way I could make the mouse work is to plug a USB mouse in. At about the same time, the unit failed to finish installing automated updates. At that point I decided that I don't want to take any chances with a one week laptop that was clearly not well and returned it. Oh, and I hate Windows 8.1

Good deal for the price. Just took a few minutes to get back the desktop and remove extra features on the mouse pad as my spouse hates anything new. And I am not particularly found of windows 8.1 either. If I wanted a tablet, I would have bought a tablet.

BUYER BEWARE !
After owning this computer for less than 3 weeks it died. Upon further examination it seems the battery was not charging. I called customer support and that's when the nightmare began. I was on the phone with them for 2 days. Customer support is in the Philippines, I asked to speak to a supervisor and after one hour on the phone they disconnected me. I asked to speak to someone in the USA they don't have anyone here to talk to. I tried for another hour texting on line to live chat and after another hour he could not help me. I will never buy another Toshiba produce for as long as I live and neither will any family member of friend. This is the worst customer repair experience I have ever had. In the end I purchased another power cord and I can only hope it will solve my problem. If not than the next thing is I will have no choice but to send it in for repair and wait till you read the terms and conditions for that. They are not responsible for anything. This is amazing. If I wanted to have the company send me a new cord to try they wanted a credit card number for them to hold for a charge of $85 to $100 just in case I don't send them back the old cord. By the way I bought the cord from them for $34.99 plus I had to pay for shipping."
