Perfect laptop for the money

This is an excellent machine. My Acer crapped out on me after about 18 months of use. I'm a writer by trade, so I'm on it all the time. I use it for most basic tasks. Writing, web browsing, social media and streaming video. It works perfectly for each of those things

It was a bit slow out of the box, but using a decrapifier software I removed all the bloatware that came on it. That sped things up significantly. The first day I had it though, my dog chewed through the adapter cord which is super thin. I was able to go and get a replacement pretty easily though. The replacement is actually better quality than the one it came with.

The screen is really bright and vibrant. It's pretty lightweight, though I don't carry this around anywhere. And the speed is great for simple tasks. For just over 400.00 you can't beat it.

***UPDATE 1-30-2015*****

I'm going to be exchanging this with Amazon for another Toshiba model. The RAM on this is only 4GB and the longer I multi-task, the slower it gets. I end up having to restart it every couple of hours or the lag becomes unbearable.

The one I ordered is almost identical but comes with 8 GB of RAM. Here's the other thing. I checked with Toshiba, and these are NOT user upgradeable. So whatever RAM it comes with, you get. This was not in the product description, so I was a little frustrated.

Plus the longer I use it, I notice I have to hit the keys much harder than other laptops or else I miss keystrokes.

Get what you pay for.

The thing to remember here is you get what you pay for. It is pretty solid and large. I haven't had any complaints. I guess the only thing I don't like about it is the keyboard. Kinda cheap, but you can always plug in an external keyboard and mouse.

Great bang for your buck

For the money you get all the bang for your buck. Plenty fast for a low end processor. Only complaints are minor- too many apps running ion background to slow speed- use energy- had them removed.; secondly, the Norton would not allow me to download Firefox[ like it better than Explorer] - so removed it and installed a different antiviral

I returned the laptop for faulty touchpad (the cursor would freeze and then move sporadically rather than where I was trying to direct it). Beyond the defect I was not impressed with having to enter a BIOS password upon turning on the laptop after setup (a password I never set and a search showed others had similar issues). Since the laptop was synched to my Google I tried one of my passwords and it worked, thankfully. I was able to log on to the laptop, revert to factory settings and return to Amazon hassle-free. The BIOS password thing could be bypassed. I returned for defective touchpad/mousepad.

Another issue that I had with the laptop was that it didn't have a scroll bar on the touchpad (either that was part of the defective issue with the touchpad/cursor or it simply is not part of this laptop design; I'm not sure). In order to scroll up and down on a page you have to use the arrows, sync your own wired or wireless mouse or use both hands on the touchpad. Being that I'm often holding a baby or toddler while working I simply don't always have two hands or a mouse at-the-ready. So that was a major turnoff. I love having a way to scroll right there on the touchpad.

I DID like the keyboard itself. It felt nice when typing. Way, way better than my ASUS which has raised keys that easily get stuck or pop off. But I think the keyboard was the only feature I liked in the very limited time I used the laptop (which was one day).

Just got this last week and LOVE it! As a rule we always buy Toshiba but I went to a HP about a year ago and just wasn't happy. So this little gem is my replacement. It's fast, easy to use has tons of space and doesn't make me only use Toshiba products!

So this isn't really a review (which I know is annoying), but I have purchased this item twice now on Amazon through a third party seller and both times recvieved a C55D series computer with different specs than those listed here. Looking into it, it seems like C55D is a series of computers and each model has a name like "c55d-a5120" or "C55D-A5240NR". I can't figure out which Toshiba model is listed here, so I would at least check the computer when you receive it (actually I would just buy something else.)

I'm still adjusting to Windows 8, I don't know what all the fuss is about...I'm no computer wizard but I have found my way around it. The picture sharpness is beautiful & the keyboard is exactly as I expected. I did add additional (4GB) RAM. Previously owned a Toshiba which was great for 8 years so I'm partial to this brand just because its what I know. For the price I am very pleased. A++delivery.

The laptop had come with a few discrepancies. For one, the model that came says on the box and the model's specs says it should have 4gb of ram out of the box. It was only until I started up the machine that I realized there was 8gb installed on the machine. However, ever since I started using it, has been randomly freezing, crashing, and restarting. It turns out that the ram installed is broken and now I need to contact Toshiba to have it fixed since it says on Toshiba's website that it is not user upgradeable.
