My college student's evaluation of this laptop

I asked my college student son to get a look at this computer--he worked on it right out of the box, and my comments here are based on his findings. Basically, there is a market for this laptop computer, but, if my son is representative of them, your college students would not be happy with this computer.

He noted a number of "pluses" he found with this computer. It comes with Windows 10 already installed, it has a number pad, it has a touch screen, it is Bluetooth enabled, and it has a huge hard drive--one TB. It has enough power to work with an office suite (but it does not include one).

But, and these are big reservations, there are some downsides to this computer. While it is technically an HD screen, the resolution is just scarcely above the cutoff measurement to make it an HD screen. The computer does not have a dedicated graphics card. It also comes loaded with bloatware and a particular anti-virus program that makes most people I know snarl when they mention it.

Toshiba markets this computer as a "value" computer, and, according to my son, it is "well suited for utility use." Still, with only 6 GB RAM, a lot of multitasking will tax the system. Still, if all one wants the computer for is to run programs from an office suite, to browse the internet, and to store a lot of video and music files, this computer will serve the purpose.

However, college students rely on their computers for far more than work; they have become portable entertainment systems for them. They stream movies and music, they play complex games on them, and they run a handful of programs on them at a time. They also want sharp visuals and hearty sound beyond the capabilities of this computer.Read more ›

Low profile, light touch keyboard

One of the hardest things to determine when buying a laptop online (without trying it out first) is how the keyboard feels. Here is a photo of the keyboard from an angle. The first thing I noticed is that the keys are low profile, in other words they don't stick out very much and have less travel than some other laptop keyboards. This makes it easy to type quietly with a light touch. I have tried hundreds of keyboards, and I like this one except for the spacebar which makes more chatter compared to the other keys. The touchpad is good, although the touchpad buttons require a little bit more force than some other laptops, but overall the keyboard and touchpad feels sturdy (not cheap feeling). Overall I think most people would like this keyboard and touchpad; although it doesn't have the most refined feel of some of the high-end performance laptops, it is pretty decent, quiet, and solid feeling.

Great value, solidly built, though bloatware is annoying

This is a solid entry-level offering that packs a considerable amount of hardware into the box for the price. With an average weight and above-average overall build quality, there are many good things to be said about this Toshiba range. From the snappy keyboard to the responsive and vibrant screen, it's hard to complain about what you're getting for under $500. For media fans the screen is more than adequate for movies, and the microphone and speakers work well for everything from Skype to Pandora. The only real let-down on the hardware is the mouse-pad which can be jerky and hard to control at times.

On the Windows front, while version 10 is a major leap forward from version 8, it's still questionable how much we've really gained from Windows 7. While we're celebrating the return of the Start menu and other common sense UI elements, the touch controls seem mostly unnecessary and heavy office or educational users will get frustrated with the renovated accessories (calculator, please come back), missing media programs and difficulty around tasks such as managing devices and printers. None of this is the fault of this Toshiba device, however, which more than capably runs standard Windows programs with its 6GB of RAM.

The PC comes packed with bloatware with everything from eBay to Dropbox vying for attention in the expanded Start Menu. It took about 30 minutes to uninstall all the junk that Toshiba have bundled here but once it was stripped down to a non-OEM build, we got along just fine. Bloatware and mousepad aside, there's much to recommend here - it's certainly leagues ahead of the Dells offered in this price range.

A computer with identity problems

I have owned several Toshiba laptops over the years and know them as reliable, good-quality machines. This model is no exception, in that the computer is solidly built, and it basically (emphasis on that word) does what you want it to. (I'm a writer, and my primary computer is a desktop; I use laptops mainly when I need to do interviews in the field or need access to a computer when I'm away from my office.)

I have been using a Macbook Pro for six years, so that is my most recent basis for comparison. I had really hoped to like the Toshiba better, especially since Apple's commitment to planned obsolescence means that I can't use certain plugins or updates anymore (latest version of Flash, most notably, which is limiting my access to certain online conferencing sites, among other things). But from my perspective, the Toshiba falls short in a couple of key areas: display and ergonomics--IOW, the key ways you interface with a computer.

By far my number-one pet peeve with this computer is its touchpad. After years of using the Mac version, which at first I didn't like until I learned its quirks (two-fingers to scroll, etc.), I found myself expecting a lot more responsiveness on the Toshiba. Alas, it isn't even close. The touchpad is larger than the Mac's, but it's like driving a truck after driving a sports sedan. Ergonomically, I have repeatedly found the buttons too far from the touchpad surface to use easily, but the worst thing is how stiff the buttons are. This is particularly an issue because unlike the Mac, I haven't figured out any way to scroll down a page without using the bar on the right of the screen. So holding down the button while keeping the cursor on the bar seems to be the only way to scroll using the keyboard.Read more ›
