THE REAL REVIEW

This is a mid range laptop from a mid range company. Toshiba is a great home laptop and not meant to be a "excellent" power laptop. You get a good affordable laptop. 8GB of memory is great and a 750GB hard drive is too. I have read reviews how it locks up and slow, I will agree with that. But the reason I found was the memory swap file was set to auto (let windows manage it) and it was using 1,7gb swap file. BIG NONO. Set it to a custom size and set it to 12GB to 20GB and whoohoo, it works much better. It has a little bloatware on it, I was able to remove the useless Wild Tangent games and a few other bloatware items and it runs well. Have been running it for a week now and no issues. I also own an HP quad core I7 with 16gb ram, a high end HP laptop and obviously you get what you pay for. Also looked at other similar laptops, but they were either more money or they could not expand beyond 8gb of memory. Having the option to expand up to 16gb is great. The battery life is low, but have not truly tested that out yet. For the price and its features, this is a good laptop. I have used all kinds and brands of laptops over the years, so I know what to look for and what works, I recommend the laptop.

Awesome laptop!

Great laptop. Clean and simple exterior, powerful processing, lots of storage space and a huge display. Was not loaded with a bunch of garbage apps, well worth what I paid for it. I have owned 5 or 6 laptops over the last decade and this is the best so far.

Slow but easily corrected

First off, the claim of 2.4Ghz is misleading. It is 1.8Ghz, up to 2.4 when it goes into turbo mode. But mine, out of the box, showed less than 1Ghz (I brought up the task manager, then clicked on performance to see the CPU speed).

To correct the problem, I brought up power options from the (Win+X) popup menu. There were two settings, balanced and eco. Eco had been set, which reduces the CPU speed to save energy. I clicked on (small print) additional plans and selected high performance. The CPU speed jumped to (nominal) 2.1Ghz (it varies), more than double what it had been.

I had read that Toshiba is notorious for loading computers with bloatware, so I used a free app from a website (Should I Remove It) to uninstall a lot of it.

The computer is now fast enough, even though it still is not the advertised 2.4Ghz. The keyboard is fine, the display crisp, the speakers acceptable. All in all, considering price, it deserves a 5 star rating. I gave it 3 because of the callousness of Toshiba in forcing a buyer to go through hoops to get a decent speed, which is still less than expected.

Decent "bang" for your "buck"!!!

A decent laptop. Light-weight materials indicate it isn't going to last too awfully long without much TLC. Plenty of HD space and plenty of RAM. Bright video with a relatively powerful graphics processor. The power plug on the side is of the type that will probably break in a few months if you actually use this thing on your "lap" instead of on a desktop - and as light as it is (probably only a couple pounds at most) one would defintely be tempted to sit around with this on their knees - so be aware of the power plug interface! Only gripe I really have is that there wasn't an option to have it come with Windows 7 Ultimate instead of 8.1. Still, a great deal of "bang" for your buck!

BEWARE! Very unreliable!!

I purchased mine December 13th 2014. By January and it was having random reboots. Sent it for service(back and forth 3 times) and they finally found the issue to be the motherboard. Now I have an issue with the network card.

Toshiba support sucks too. Don't buy this laptop. Don't buy Toshiba. If you have to, get an extended warranty or protection plan.
