A good "every day work" PC, with a gorgeous 17" screen.

Toshiba's naming/numbering system makes it hard to find info on their computers. In my initial searches for this model, I found nothing... Not even an exact entry on the Toshiba web site. Part of this is because Toshiba makes a base unit and then customizes it into a variety of feature-sets.

This unit is as listed, but there are a few things that weren't on the Amazon listing. For example, I was pleasantly surprised to find that it has Bluetooth built-in (and here I went and ordered a Bluetooth dongle I didn't need!). I was disappointed to find that this version of this C-Series laptop does not allow you to easily swap out the hard drive or RAM -- Unlike others in this series, there is no access panel on the bottom of this model. Unless you're into opening the whole PC (which will surely void your warranty), what you see is what you get.

So what do you get? A relatively speedy quad-core that seems to handle everyday computing without lag. A modest hard drive that is up to the same everyday tasks. Windows 10 pre-installed. A DVD burner, full-sized keyboard with number pad, 17" screen, fair-sized touch pad with physical mouse buttons, two USB 2.0 ports and one USB 3.0 port, an SD card slot, HDMI port, VGA port, and an Ethernet port. It's rounded out with 6GB of RAM (more than enough for Windows 10 running everyday apps) and a decent build quality.

The last 17" laptop I owned was easily twice as thick as this unit, though that was many years ago. It was also a heavy brick, where as this unit is relatively lightweight for having such a robust screen. And what about that screen? It's SO bright! The color's good, though I do notice a slight bluish tint sometimes.Read more ›

Functional but not Pretty.

I wanted to really like this laptop, but it is really not that great. It does fall into a low end pricing category but it is just not up to todays standards even for an entry level computer.

The trackpad has a terrible texture that rubs on your fingers. It is also not very sensitive and their are no adjustments for it. Tapping it requires more of a firm press and this is not really how a trackpad should be setup. It throws off the cursor every time. I have defaulted to using the buttons only, but am used to being able to tap the pad.

The keyboard feels spongy. Not my favorite. Even the raised identifiers on the F and J keys are hard to find. They need to be a bit more pronounced IMO. Perhaps over time you can develop a good quick return to hand placement motion, but I found returning to typing required looking down at the keyboard to get my hands back into position.

The screen is terrible at off axis viewing. Even front on it doesn't look that great and has very little in the way of adjustment and calibration that actually does anything. Windows 10 screen calibrating relies on your laptop manufacturer's screen setup process and the laptop really doesn't have much going for it in the way of adjusting that. Not a great screen to look at compared to todays smartphones.

Everything about this computer has been budgeted down. I would have much rather had a smaller laptop, i.e.. 12" with better components that have a larger one at 17" but was not great. If you need an inexpensive laptop to function in a rough environment or be used as a server for some automation features, or for kids to learn on then this may fill that niche.Read more ›
