I thought long and hard before purchasing this laptop, especially since there are few reviews anywhere for it. To help others make their own decisions, I'm going to list why I bought this model from Amazon.

1) It's a touch screen. I recently obtained a new Lenovo with a touch screen, which was my first experience at integrating a laptop with a touch screen, instead of just on phones and tablets. It IS useful, not just a gimmick, even when you are somewhat impaired with mobility in your hands & arms. It speeds up getting to where I wanted to go, whether on Windows 8 or 10.

2) I had just gotten a new Toshiba laptop this past spring, but I didn't get one with a touch screen. I loved the laptop, and despite it being less expensive than the Lenovo, it performed better with fewer problems and a LOT less intrusive bloatware. I hated the Lenovo after a few weeks, and went back to my cheaper Toshiba. I kept joking that if I could have the Lenovo keyboard & screen, with the Toshiba guts, I'd be happy. Essentially, this laptop delivered most of what I wanted, keeping the essential core of processor, harddrive space, and RAM the same as the previously purchased model. This model also has an optical drive, for us dinosaurs that still install software and occasionally burn disks for things. The Lenovo had abandoned that. It also has a slot for my camera cards, since I also still use a camera instead of just my cell phone camera.

3) Price. I'm a cheapskate. I wanted to pay the least amount, and while Walmart had the same price for a very similar model, that model lacked the optical drive. I also am suspicious of how good their extended warranty is if you ever file a claim.Read more ›

Great buy for the price!

The Toshiba Satellite L55DT-C5238 is a good laptop for the price. It is decently fast, has a good picture, and great sound. This is a good middle of the line laptop and that is what I was looking for, so this got 5 stars. If your looking for an amazing, super fast laptop, this isn't it. I also must say, the design of this laptop is very sleek, modern, with plenty of shine. There is a lot of plastic so it does feel a little delicate.

I have a $1600 ASUS ROG Gaming Laptop, a $1200 Lenovo Yoga 2, and my wife has the $1800 HP ENVY 17t. I would say this Toshiba is the best bang for the buck. Yes my other laptops are faster, some may have better graphics, and may be more durable, but for each almost a $1000 more, they aren't that much more impressive. If your just looking to look around on the web, play some movies, listen to some music, and maybe do some class work, this is for you.

Cons: The new Windows is absolutely terrible. Since Windows 7, it seems Microsoft OS's and programs in general are getting worse.

great for the price -- but could be faster

There are better -- faster -- laptops, but not at this price.

I'm very much into speed. I believe in buying as much RAM as I can afford. Last year I retired my Lenovo largely because it only had only 8 GB RAM. I had trouble using Google Street View. I was trying to move along city streets, checking out neighborhoods, but a mile or so down a street requires downloading lots of video data. It eventually became slow as molasses.

So I upgraded to a Toshiba Tecra, because it was the only laptop I could find with 32 GB RAM. The most RAM I could find. Now my Google Street View searches are never slow.

(I have a DSL connection, not cable. I don't know if 8 GB RAM is faster with a cable connection, but getting 32 GB RAM really sped up my Google Street Views.)

This Toshiba Satellite laptop is only 8 GB RAM. That might suffice for some people. I usually got by with 8 GB RAM. But when I need "to go up to eleven" (to quote Spinal Tap) -- or in this case, up to 32 GB RAM -- I appreciate having it.

Another problem with this Satellite. It's got a traditional hard disk drive -- HDD -- the kind with spinning platters. And it only runs at 5400 rpm (revolutions per minute). Now, if you really want speed, you need one of those new solid state drives -- SSD. Which my Toshiba Tecra has. Or at least a 7200 rpm HDD, which my old Lenovo had. But only 5400 rpm? SLOW.

A fast hard drive is important, as the faster the drive, the quicker your computer can access the data on it.Read more ›

Bought this for my daughter and her young family. I set it up and she's very happy with it so far. she has had for about three weeks now.I put it through its paces before giving it to her.I have a acer aspire myself and i'm very pleased with it. but back to this laptop, It has meet mine and my daughters every expectations with speed, performance, simple to set up and use. So I just bought another one for my wife. Very much worth the price. Sure wished it had a back lit keyboard. That would put this system over the top. Thanks great product for the price!!!
