Good value for general use, large storage with touch screen.

This is a review of the Toshiba Satellite L55t-C5388, there are other models with different specs with similar numbers and some times the reviews get bunched together under different laptops yet same brand. We have tablets, desktops, smartphones, and two other older laptops in our house. First thing I noticed is slower start up as tablets are instant and our other laptop has a SSD drive in it. Not super long but there is a waiting period. Comes preloaded with quite a bit of software and apps, you need to sign in and sign up to use most of them, and pay for a lot of them separately. I chose to uninstall many. Be aware if you accept the standard sign ins you are allowing them to track your internet browsing and other data. I miss the days of free roaming the Internet without being tracked to be marketed to. To use Cortana, you must let Microsoft collect and use info about your location, history, contacts and etc. Be sure to update the windows and chose your security program.
The display is ok to me, I have other budget screens in the house that are comparable. The screen tends to look slightly washed out and words have fuzzy edges. There is a control in advanced settings for clear type text, you can set it for your individual eyes.
It does have a standard CD/DVD drive, a web camera built in, 2 USB 3 ports, HDMI, as well as a card reader. Head phone jack, Ethernet port, standard USB and power port.
Keyboard is flat spaced chiclet keys set in a plastic base, large wrist rests with responsive trackpad, as well as dedicated number keys.
We have a couple computers that run Windows 8, never liked it much, while Windows 10 still has some annoying features it seems to be easier to work around and they gave back normal desktop start up screen.Read more ›

First off, you have you trouble getting the touch screen to scroll, go to microsoft update and download and install the latest updates, that will fix your problem. Overall this is great laptop with the perfect sized screen, and it is plus that it is so light at a little over 5 lbs! The color is a light gold with a brushed look but is coated such that it should resist scratches. Something i LOVE...is the keys. They are almost silent but still have a punchy feel to them. And bonus, it has the side 9 keys too which always makes number entry so much easier.

Start up was easy, no issues getting things set up and registered if you have an internet connection. Sound is great, it has Skullcandy speakers that run the length of the laptop at the top so it really sounds good and I didn't even get up to 3/4 of max volume. Windows 10 is a nice mix of Windows 7 and 8...some may find it easier than Windows 8.

This laptop also has a Cortana quick key, which is like the Siri of Windows 10. It has very good voice recognition, definitely better than Google Now. I am an android user so I can't compare to Siri, but it is the same concept. There is a search box with microphone on the bottom of the screen, just tap and ask your question. I didn't have any performance issues, I was playing videos and still searching the internet with no problems, with Core i7 you should expect good performance.

Battery life is pretty good, I have been using it non stop for about 2 hours and I have an estimated 6 hours left, using the balanced power option. Touchpad is smooth and doesn't get in your way typing, I haven't had any problems with accidentally touching it, as with some laptops and then you end up having to turn it off and use an external mouse or go crazy.Read more ›

Fantastic speed and hard drive capacity for a laptop.

My previous experience with laptop computers was with a small XP netbook and an 11.6 inch Chromebook. This Toshiba totally blows the old netbook right out of the water, in terms of battery life, speed, hard drive capacity, and of course it has the huge screen and the optical drive. It also seems to run far cooler. It is harder to compare to the Chromebook, as they are different beasts, but obviously number one on the plus side is it does allow you to run all the latest Windows software. On the negative side, it feels like a lead brick to carry around compared to the little Chromebook. That is partly the price you pay for the big screen and optical drive, and it is not an unreasonable one. I'm also guessing Windows requires more power to run than Chrome, therefore heavier batteries to get comparable battery life.

The touch screen feature certainly functions perfectly, and though I'm still adapting to that feature and to the Windows 10 operating system I think I can safely say the touch screen is a big plus when you don't have a mouse. Screen viewing clarity is OK. I have nothing else in this price range to compare to, but frankly expected it to be more dazzling than it is. Bear in mind, I consider this a high-priced laptop; others might think it is mid-priced or even cheap.

I gave up on the snail-slow netbook years ago. For now I think the Chromebook with its light weight and quick startup still rules for checking my email or the eBay auctions I'm watching. But if one needs a full-blown PC in portable form, this Toshiba Satellite is an amazing piece of technology.
