I am lucky enough to have reviewed quite a few laptops, and I'm finally getting to do something I've always wanted to: compare two almost identical models to help people decide if the more or less expensive model suits them better. So I got my mitts on this guy as well as his slightly more expensive big brother, the Toshiba Satellite Fusion 15 L55W-C5259 15.6-Inch Convertible 2 in 1 Touchscreen Laptop. The difference? Big brother has an additional 2 GB of RAM and an i5 chip. Is it worth it? I'll tell you my thoughts at the end - the bulk of the reviews will be the same of course, as those specs are the only discernible differences.

Basic specs on this one include an i3chip, 6 GB of RAM, 128 GB SSD, and the following ports: 1 UBS 2.0, 2 USB 3.0, HDMI and card reader. There's also an audio port, as well as hardware volume up/down and Windows buttons on the left edge. Here's how it all works together:

First, it looks great. The case is lightweight plastic with a very nice, non-fingerprint-grabbing finish, and it looks classy. It closes securely but has no latch - not a problem though, as it's a bit hard to get open. Not that it's tight, it's just tough to get your fingers in between the panel and keyboard. An indentation would have been nice here.

Once open, the full-size (with number pad) keyboard is exposed, complete with back-lighting and wonderful action. These keys are low profile non-clicky keys, but I really love them. I think I can work faster on this keyboard than any others I've typed on. So yay that.

I waited to do this review after a full month's use, so I could give it a complete evaluation. And as I frequently do, I will update this review as time passes, to let you know the good, the bad, and the ugly.

First off, the Toshiba brand deserves respect, and in fact my mother's Toshiba Satellite laptop lasted her 7 years. Secondly, this Toshiba Satellite Fusion is both a laptop and a tablet, with various positional adjustments so you can find your own sweet spot for comfort and functionality. And let me tell you, I give it an A+++ for both factors. As an especially lightweight laptop/tablet, it is already more comfortable, but when you add in the ability to find your own comfort level with positioning, that knocks it out of the park.

But wait, there's more. How many of us use our tech in bed, and run into the problem of not being able to see the keyboard if the bedroom light is off, or having to put the light on and disturb our partner's sleep just to see the keyboard. That's no longer a problem because of the backlit keyboard on this Toshiba Satellite Fusion.

It is much sturdier than you pictured. And the name Fusion fits better and better the more you look into it, because everything about it offers part tablet/part laptop features. There are apps, like a tablet, and programs, like a laptop. Everything so far has been very user-friendly and intuitive. I'll be back in a couple months with an updated evaluation. But so far I'm extremely pleased to highly recommend it.

This month I'm reviewing both this laptop as well as its slightly less expensive little brother the Toshiba Satellite Fusion 15 L55W-C5257 15.6-Inch Convertible 2 in 1 Touchscreen Laptop, and hope that this will help those on the fence between the two make an informed choice.The majority of the two reviews will be the same, as the only real differences are RAM (little brother has 2 GB less) and chip (this one's i5 vs an i3). At the end, I'll talk about the functional differences and pass along my thoughts on which one is the way to go.
