Good Windows 10 laptop for the price

This laptop is a very basic laptop with little-to-no bells and whistles, except for a very large screen and decent built-in speakers. I will try to steer away from any Windows features since this is not a review about Windows, but about the laptop.

The good
* 8GB of RAM is very good, so is 1TB of disk space.
* Very nice large screen 17.3 - it’s about as large as they get. (I do have a slightly larger screen size, but when you hit this size, the laptop is usually called a ‘mobile desktop’ since these computers are very heavy).
* The included speakers do remarkable well. Normally I find built-in speakers worthless, but these actually produce a good sound.
* Little-to-no bloatware. I found a few Toshiba things, which I could easily remove. It does have a virus killer installed. The total software pre-installed was only 32GB, including Windows.
* The keyboard is tuned to Windows 10, so there are several media keys, and specific windows keys (like the home and Cortana button)
* A FULL keyboard. Yes, this is a nice feature since you have your 10-key pad (number keys).
* Fairly light-weight for the size. My other large screen-size laptop is around 16 pounds
* Integrated SD card reader and 2 3.0 USB ports for ultra-fast connection speeds (I use those with my USB 3.0 portable drives)
* HDMI control, which is great if you want to project pictures, email, you tube or anything else on a modern TV
* The built-in mic and camera are great
* Works well with some of the apps I downloaded (MediaMonkey, IrFanview and Media Player Classic) and it was easy to connect to my WiFi network and NAS. Streaming went great.

The distractors
* The entire laptop is made of plastic, although it looks like metal, it is not.Read more ›

This Toshiba Satellite L75-C7234 17.3 inch laptop is priced middle of the road for a new laptop, but offers good quality performance and features usually found on higher priced units. Out of the box the large, slick, thin laptop has silky smooth pearl finish and feels quality made. Upon first power up, the laptop goes into initial configuration seamlessly. The large screen is glossy, and the keyboard is just a few inches smaller than a standard desktop, so numbers lock keys are included, which is a nice feature on a laptop.

This laptop features Windows 10 operating system, which incorporates the best features from Windows 7 and 8. The power button is again on the left lower corner, with many easy accessible options. It's easy to navigate the control panel to see how much bloatware is installed , and I was happy to see there there wasn't much. The McAfe virus protection is installed, along with Win Zip and a trial version of Microsoft Office 365.

The default browser is Microsoft Edge (IE) and although we prefer Firefox, this new version of Internet Explorer navigates well. I maneuvered quickly through multiple web pages and finally landed on Netflix to assess picture quality and sound. I was pleased on both accounts. And all a long, the laptop is sitting on my lap, and generating no heat! There is no noise from the hard drive or fans, either, which is a real plus.

I uploaded the older but still popular game Stalker, and Toshiba handled it with ease.

Back to Netflix streaming, the sound at 67% was loud without distortion. The room was filled with sound at that level. I used my Sennheiser headphones with the laptops mini-jack and the sound elevated to greater heights, which is only natural.Read more ›

Overcoming the dread...

... of another "upgrade." There is a decade's old aphorism among tech-users to always wait for Version 2.1. It is a short-hand way of advocating that one should not be the first kid on the block to own a nifty new product. Let them shake out all the "bugs" first, and the early buyer not be the "beta-tester." Who remembers the first inch-thick, boxy Kindles?

Admittedly, when the Vine program offers you a new laptop, it helps overcome that reluctance to be a "beta-tester." Overall, save for a few reservations indicated below, I've been delighted. Out of the box, it was basically fully functional within an hour. The key feature that I like about this laptop is the 17 inch screen. Yes, aging eyes, and all, but I find it so much easier not only for browsing websites, but also for programs such as Excel, where I retain some key information. And I like the new browser, Microsoft Edge... so much so that I am using it instead of Google Chrome. It seems to work well with the new Windows 10 operating system. I find "Edge" is more intuitive, or, at least what I was more used to. That's compared with a year-old laptop, with Windows 8, IE 11, which seemed to reverse the location of many items, something I never fully got used to, and find a complete annoyance, compared against an even earlier, Windows 7, IE 9 system.

Another attractive features include the built-in DVD drive, a large, comfortable keyboard, and a readily accessible power switch. I "bite the bullet" and am now subscribing to the 2013 Microsoft Office. Overall, though I don't need even more "bells and whistles" on Microsoft Word, the most functional of products, it does seem to work quite smoothly and well.Read more ›
