I've had several Toshiba laptops over many years. This one is the latest. So far, it is living up to expectations (speed, features . . .). A couple of caveats:

1. I find the touchpad more difficult than the one on my last Toshiba (one I've had for about five years). I never use wireless mouse on the older one, but on this one, had to resort to it immediately. With practice, I'm getting better with this touchpad. Maybe I can find out how to adjust sensitivity so that I don't have to press so hard.

2. The DVD drive requires very precise placement of the disc and more pressure than I am used to in order to properly insert a disc. If not firmly on the spindle, and tilted the wrong way, the disc can slide above the drive enclosure and become lodged inside the machine. (I had to have a computer shop open the case to rescue my disc. I'm speaking from experience here.) Button that opens the drive is hard to find and push. But that is also an advantage, as it is unlikely that you'll accidentally push it.

Those are small quibbles. My old MS wireless mouse works fine with the new laptop, and now I know to be more careful when inserting a disc, and to double-and triple-check before closing the tray.

The machine came with Windows 8.1. THAT was an adjustment from the Win Vista I've used for years. (Windows is a Microsoft issue, not a Toshiba issue, of course.) But after a couple of days of learning mostly by trial and error, I've got it working comfortably enough, with task bar at the bottom of the screen, the apps I use pinned there, and reasonable efficiency in finding files.

I started out loving this computer. The specs are good, and the general performance has lived up to my expectations. The graphics are about what you would expect - not gaming quality, but perfectly fine for everything else. I would expect no more at this price point. The speakers are robust and fairly clear.

The problem comes when you try to type on the keyboard. I have owned many computers, and have never had a keyboard even close to as bad as this one. To type a document is excruciating - some keys fail to register half the time, and some (such as the i's and n's in my case) invariably register double character every time, no matter how you push the key. I have had to correct about ten errors just in this short review. I can't believe a company as reputable as Toshiba included such a cheap keyboard.

If you plan on using this computer mostly for web browsing, etc., it should be fine. However, if you need to use the keyboard for anything more than entering Google searches, etc., I would strongly recommend you look elsewhere.

I have had others and they do not compare to this laptop. I love its lightweight, long battery life. Have had this over a year and haven't had a problem yet. Love the big screen and the nice size keyboard. would recommend to anyone. I use this daily for work and college with no problems.

This is deeply disappointing!

I'm a software developer, I care a great deal about the hardware upon which I work, and this will be my last Toshiba - having used them for years on account of a record of reliability. This one has not failed yet per se - though it sounds as though it is struggling to cool in even modest room temperatures, and they have not included the health monitor software that would let you check CPU cooling (I wonder why not?).

The single biggest sin this unit commits is that you cannot access the memory and hard disk simply to upgrade/replace them. I intended to transfer a hard disk from my previous development machine to replace the slow one that comes with this unit, and now it appears this might even invalidate warranty. This is an absolute disgrace! (especially looking at other reviews who said the hard disk died that came with it).

The display on the unit is very sharp - but I run it with a primary monitor so my enjoyment of that is limited. Fortunately I also run an external keyboard and mouse - I say fortunately - because the quality on the Toshiba ones built into the unit are very cheap feeling in this respect. I don't like either compared to all previous models I have used.

If this were a $300 laptop - I'd shrug and say you get what you pay for - and probably give it more stars, as I wouldn't have big expectations at that price point (ironically my last cheap laptop - also a Toshiba - DOES have the access panels in the back that I need here).

But this is $1000! I expect much better at that price point - I don't know about everyone else - but that's quite a lot of money... and the last Satellite (older model) I had at this price point was a really nice machine...

Unfortunately I needed a powerful machine fast to replace a water damaged unit, so not sure yet if I can really afford to send this back - but shame on you Toshiba. It's time I gave your competitors a chance.

This is not my first Toshiba laptop and prior satisfaction with Toshiba was my main reason for deciding on this unit. In addition my son helped me find this unit at an excellent price. I'm still learning the finer points of operating this laptop and probably will continue to learn as time goes by. As with prior purchases of Toshiba I see a well above average product.
