Excellent value for the price.

I went ahead, and decided to purchase this laptop. Do not listen to the reviewer that only gave it 2 stars simply because he did not read the description. As it clearly states 'DVDRW Drive Not Included'. This is very common for thin laptops now, and can easily be solved with a $25 portable dvd drive. Everything is being shifted towards digital downloads, and thumb drives now.

The laptop is very slim, and extremely light. The style of it is pretty nice, and it doesn't feel cheaply made like many other laptops on the market. I really like the way the keyboard is on it, and the keys feel smooth to type with. I touchpad felt a little bit clumsy to use, but I didn't try to adjust the setting yet and I am usually using a mouse anyway. It comes with karman/kardon speakers which sound pretty good for a laptop. The screen is really good on it, and the colors look very natural.

As for internal components, you cannot beat the price. I've been searching for laptops for a couple weeks, and very few can even match the specs vs price on this. It comes with an Haswell I7-4710HQ, but it's actually a good one. Not one of these 1.7ghz I7's that have been flooding the markets for cheaper laptops now. It came stock at 2.6ghz, but can go up to 3.5ghz with Intel turbo boost technology. For those that don't know what Intel TBT is, in a nut shell it's overclocking the processor. But instead of staying overclocked, it stays at 2.6ghz and only goes higher when needed. This essentially saves battery life, and helps prolong the life of the processor. I had bought this laptop for a hair bit more at Staples, but it came with 12gb Ram instead of 8gb like the one Amazon sells. Still an I7 that can go up to 3.5ghz, and 8gb ram for under $700 is an amazing deal.Read more ›

Great performance for the money

I did quite a bit of research before I bought this computer. Processor speed was important to me, and this machine has about as fast a processor as I could find for a laptop in this price range. It also has more ram than many. I was not sure how the graphics would turn out to be when I ordered the machine.

The machine has exceeded my expectations, and they were pretty high to start with. It runs programs more smoothly and better than my earlier generation i7 laptop. And the graphics have turned out to be great -- at least for my needs. The difference comes across most in some of the games I play -- such as Civ 5 -- which go more smoothly and look MUCH better than on my older machine. But it does just about everything a bit better.

Note: I use my computer mostly for work and the internet and I am not a hard-core gamer. So I can't vouch for this as a serious gaming machine. Do your own research on that. I would bet there are better choices for serious gamers. But I also bet those gaming machines cost a lot more and this machine does everything well.

IMO the machine also is light and sleek for the screen size, and for what it can do. It has the ports I need.

I almost overlooked this machine because the first (and then the only) rating here dissed it with 2 stars. But then I read the review carefully and saw the only criticism was that it does not have an on board optical drive. That was not a serious issue for me, so I took the plunge. I am glad I did!

IMO, the absence of an optical drive is a "wash" at the very worst. It saves space, and you can use an external. All in all, I think that is a fair trade off.

This seems like a great machine so far! I will try to remember to update the review if anything changes.

A laptop that will tick MOST of your boxes.

First of all, this is a pretty good laptop for its price. The pros for this machine would be:

- It has a i7 4710HQ processor, which is way better than the i7 4500U processors that a lot of cheaper laptops currently have.
- It has 8GB of RAM which is quite a lot to run most everyday applications.
- 1TB of hard disk space couple with my own 1TB external HDD means I won't be running out of space any time soon.
- Decent size and weight means I can carry this on my back all day when I move from class to class without feeling too sore.
- Bluetooth 4.0 which is energy efficient and offers fast connectivity.

Average points would be:

- Battery life is decent.Just about makes it through a 2 hour movie or video leaving some juice to spare.
- It has 2 USB 3.0 ports and one USB 2.0 port. A lot of HP laptops for similar prices will give you 4 USB 3.0 ports.
- No touchscreen. While there are more expensive computers without them, there are cheaper computers which do offer touchscreens. While Windows 8.1 would work smoother with a touchscreen, the lack of it makes minimal difference to the user experience, especially if you have a mouse in hand.

Negatives. The reason why I gave it 4 stars is because:

- The keyboard isn't the sharpest around. There have been multiple times when I would hit a key but the said character or even space would not type. I don't face the same problems with my desktop or my mom's computer so I am pretty sure it is the keyboard.
- Same with the touchpad. This is more noticeable because I would move my finger on it and the mouse would stay still on the screen.
- The graphics card is the inbuilt Mobile Intel HD graphics.Read more ›
