Soooooo does it have a backlit keyboard or not?

First - Bought through Appletech. They did everything in their power to make it a positive buying experience. My transaction with that company was great.

Second - It's a laptop all right. Speakers are great. Windows 8 tiles seem pointless. Webcam is fine. Two weeks in and the computer already seems to lag a bit when downloading, starting applications, or loading webpages, but who knows where in the process it's being slowed down. All in all it's a good computer, but what gets me is the backlit keyboard. It doesn't have one! It's sold as having one, has a sticker right on the wrist-rest that says it has one, but the S55-A5176 does NOT have backlit keys. If it does (as some reviews have said) it's hidden so well that it might as well not exist. I've scoured the interwebs and found no cntrl key combo that works, no BIOS setting to flip at startup, nothing. It doesn't take away from the experience, but what's up with that?

Light, powerful especially with a SSD

After reviewing many choices, I settled with this device. Price is reasonable and I liked the performance numbers even though for the same price many desktops are faster.

The very first thing after I received it, I swapped out the HDD with a Samsung 500GB HDD.

It was a pleasure to turn it on and off. It take about 7 seconds from pushing the power button to the Windows login prompt.
Shutoff takes about 3 seconds.

When I had an issue with the SDD (after I installed FreeBSD, the firmware prevented the new OS from booting up), I replaced it with the original HDD to recover. It seems like it took forever for the Windows login prompt. And everything was slow.

This is a fast machine but I must use it with SDD.

I noticed that it is very difficult to get into the firmware config screen. When the Toshiba logo comes up, you need to press the escape key, but does not seem to work consistently.

I highly recommend this machine, but I also recommend spending another $250 for a SSD for an ultimate notebook solution.

Great performance, fair price

Great Laptop, I searched for weeks so I could buy the best laptop with a $650 budget. So I bought this one since it had features that you would only see in laptops that cost around $1000. First of all I have had only Toshiba Laptops, last one I had was a netbook, had it for 5 years and got my degree using that one. To make things short, I thought it was time to get a new one since Im going to study a Master degree, I wanted a bigger screen, a good processor, high Ram memory capacity and high ammount of space in the hard drive. So this one was the one, it has an i7 Intel Core processor (the best one out there) and 8 GB of Ram Memory (maybe twice than average), plus 750 GB of hard disk space, wich was enough for me.

I received the laptop today, all the set up was fast, took me a little bit more than It should but because Im migrating from windows XP, and this is all new to me.

I cant complain, it looks gorgeous, has everything I need, didnt come with any problems, its very fast. I love this machine.

So why not 5 out of 5? Well, I really wanted to have the backlit keyboard and this one doesnt have one (despite that you even have a sticker that says it does), I knew that this one didnt have one but I sacrificed that because of the other great features I mentioned above. Also, the internal battery (non removal) was almost a deal braker to me, but then I thought that you cant have it all, I already have awesome features at a low price, so I sacrificed that too.

So my final veredict is 4 out of 5, I recommend this Laptop to everyone who wants a high performance machine at the lowest price possible, and of course, its a Toshiba.

Nice but not top class

The laptop is well designed but the case and monitor edges are not well mated. When one catches an edge, it makes one feel they are separating. The apps have too many ads which is bothersome.

Sticker say's Backlit Raised Tile Keyboard w/10-Key. Say's all s50 Series has this. False advertising !!! Most of my work is done in lowlight conditions and this was a very good reason to purchase this unit. I had looked at touchscreen models and chose this one based on the keyboard. Great laptop and tech specs for the price point

Great laptop for the price. I usually buy Dell, but their prices couldn't compete with this Toshiba in the same tech spec category. The only thing that I dislike about this laptop is the hinge placement for the screen, but that's more of a personal preference.
