I bought this laptop from this seller on 1/19/2015.

When I received the item, everything looked ok. It ran well and I was satisfied. The next day I decided to watch some YouTube videos with a friend, and that's when I noticed that the computer got REALLY hot underneath. Then we started watching some Netflix, and after about 40 minutes of Orange is the New Black, the computer randomly shutdown, the screen going black instantly.

I was really annoyed with this issue, but I did nothing because I was stupid.

I also started to notice that it had internet connectivity problems. I'd turn the computer on, start working on my homework, but the computer would randomly stop connecting to the internet. It would stay connected to the WiFi network, but internet access was gone. It was very frustrating because several times I lost internet connectivity at crucial moments, be it working on an assignment or playing a game. The only way to restore connectivity would be to restart the computer.

These were really bad signs, and I should have done something then, maybe this would have turned out better if I had, however I didn't want to have to return the computer.

I had just bought it and waited several days for it to get there, so I tried to ignore the problem and tried to think of clever ways of keeping the thing from overheating. Nothing seemed to help. It would still randomly go black no matter how I positioned it to get more air underneath. I even bought a laptop cooling fan from Amazon, an Aventek, but the fan was unable to prevent the overheating and subsequent shutdown.Read more ›

Thank you for the review, Martin, and sorry to hear about the blue screens errors on your Satellite S55.

Windows blue screen errors can result from a lot of things. It could be hardware, although these errors are more typically caused by software issues. The most straightforward way to determine whether it's a software issue rather than hardware is to perform a system reset to restore your laptop to factory settings. (Make sure all of your data are backed up before doing so since all personal files will be deleted in the process.)

If the trouble persists after the reset please contact Toshiba support at 800-457-7777.

I've bought and set up a lot of computers for the small business that I am a part of. This was, by far, the slickest, quickest setup of a PC that I have done yet. It ran through the updates and setup in lightning speed time. The size and weight and look also get thumbs up in my book.

the laptop in general met my expectations except the hybrid VGA and the screen resolution since maximum takes 768 in height which is the main issue i am facing i hope it has a fix with an update to driver at some time but in general i recommend it.

Cons
Low battery life 3-5 hours only
Does not support windows 10 without having to install lots of additional drivers. The touch pad driver can be found at toshiba.com (You will need a external mouse to navigate as the default driver does not work)
Second day the battery say plugged in and not charging
Hard drive makes a weird sound and is very noisy
Laptop gets hot
Toshiba support is a joke and refuses to help
Battery wear was at 2% after 30 minutes of youtube. Toshiba says this is normal. At this rate of decay the battery will be useless in 2 years. (Toshiba told me no one uses their laptop for more then a year? )

End results
I wont be buying toshiba again and returning the laptop is a huge hassle. I made a bad choice buying this without reading all the negative reviews.

Thank you for the review, Mohammed, and sorry to hear about the subpar support you received for your Satellite S55-B5266.

Regarding battery charge life, there's a possibility that the battery power monitoring system is having some type of calibration issue, in which case the reported amount of remaining charge may be inaccurate. I recommend letting the laptop run from battery power until it shuts down (you may need to adjust power management settings first to prevent it from going into Sleep mode before the battery has fully discharged.) Going through that discharge process followed by a full recharge will recalibrate the charge monitoring/detection system to give you an accurate reading, with the understanding that battery charge life may vary considerably depending on configuration, resource demands of applications used, and power management settings.

This unit should be compatible with Windows 10 and we don't have any other reports of the touchpad not working after the upgrade, so it's unclear why this occurred in your case. You can find Toshiba drivers and utilities required for use with Windows 10 on this model at http://win10upgrade.toshiba.com/swupdate/input.aspx?region=TAIS&lang=en&country=US -- but touchpad drivers aren't included in that list because they wouldn't normally need to be updated after a Windows 10 upgrade.

Laptops, in general, do tend to get warm or even what some might consider hot, depending on the resource demands of the applications in use. High performance processors such as the Intel Core i7 found in this model may be prone to running warmer than lower-powered units, but if the unit gets excessively hot then I recommend calling Toshiba support at 800-457-7777 to have your concern addressed and possibly make repair arrangements if it's determined that something out of the ordinary is going on.

Finally, our apologies for the less than helpful experience with a support agent. We expect more of our support staff and certainly we expect our laptops to be in active use for much longer than one year!
