When you review a laptop like this, you must review the laptop itself and how it works with the pre-installed Operating System (Windows 10). Yes, you can "downgrade" your Operating System to Windows 8.1 (or lower). However, I wanted to stick with the latest and "greatest" and keep a pulse of what's happening. So, I decided to set it up after a full charge and had 3 issues.

1. I turned it on and started going through the install setup steps: Location->Network->Settings->Account. I got the account page and was pulled away for a minute. When I returned, screen was black but you could see the mouse. Moved it and waited for about 5 minutes. No luck. So, I rebooted (That might have been the mistake). After that, the laptop was stuck in an infinite loop of Location->Network(skipped because set)->Settings... then "Wait a Moment"... then reboot. Other people have this issue with Windows 10:

The fix was to start-up in Toshiba Recovery mode (Hold down 0 while pressing the power button) and reset (reinstall) the system. I learned this after contacting Toshiba customer support. They were awesome. Didn't wait long and they didn't beat around bush. Funny thing is that I started a Microsoft online chat 15-20 minutes before I called Toshiba. I was off the phone with Toshiba when Microsoft chat support finally connected me to a tech. The system reset may take an hour or so. Moral of the story: If you see a black screen with just a mouse pointer, be patient before you give up on it. Note: no "Windows Key is needed" for your Windows 10 Operating System. It's built into the laptop.

Toshiba makes a nice laptop, but their other machines might make a better choice for some.

When I had the opportunity to test one of these, I started looking for specs and initial magazine reviews and such to see if it was going to be worth it. What I saw there left me with mixed feelings, but it was definitely worth taking the time to review this product. A week or so earlier, I saw Dell product offered that would have been a dream laptop. It had the latest of everything and huge screen resolution, but it also ran about $2000 retail. Sometimes, one has to keep their feet planted on the earth. Not everyone can afford, nor do they need, that $2000 laptop. This product is a little less than half that price, and I can see the things that are missing, but it's a product I could easily live with for the next three or four years.

What's important to you about a laptop? For me, I need the contact points to be of good quality, good battery life, decent performance, and, of course, reliability. I'll go through those areas in more detail below, but the summary is that this laptop delivers what I need well enough to be worth buying at this price point.

First, the contact points. That's the keyboard, touchpad and screen. The keyboard is fine and back lit, though I prefer the slightly concave keys of my desktop over these flat ones. That's a trade-off to create a thin notebook here that I can live with for the amount of typing I need to do on my laptop. I'll stick to my desktop for serious coding and writing, though. The touchpad falls short for me, and as much as one uses that on a laptop, it's a potential deal breaker. The biggest flaw here is in the driver. One thing I have always done with my notebooks is to disable touch-tap, because it is too easy to hit it by accident and end up somewhere you didn't want to be.Read more ›

I love this laptop

It has been almost 6 years since I last owned a computer. My PC was stolen back in 2009 and I just couldn't afford to buy a new one. So pretty much I have been doing all of my computing from my smart phone. and let me tell you that is not fun and inn some cases a pain in the rear. So I cannot begin to tell you how excited I was to get the opportunity to try out this brand new Toshiba Satellite laptop. First of all this laptop is light and is loaded with features. Right from the start the laptop comes loaded with the all new Microsoft Windows 10. It looks good but it is taking me some time to get used to it since the last windows I used was XP. It has an Intel core i7 quad core processor that is fast. I have been playing a lot of video games on this with no problems. The screen is clear and bright and the sound is excellent. And I love the backlit keyboard which comes in handy when using the laptop at night. And best of all this laptop is quiet. The only problem I can see is that it runs hot at times, mostly when playing games but considering all that it does I can accept that. I can highly recommend this laptop for all of your computing needs.

I was thrilled to receive a review copy of this laptop computer from amazon. Unfortunately, my review copy was malfunctioning right from the start. For some reason, the mouse pad was not functioning. I contacted Toshiba customer service and though several attempts were made (via instructions over the phone and via remote access by a service representative) to get the system fully functional, it was not possible to resolve the issue over the phone. I was sent instructions and a pre-paid postage box for sending the computer to a servicing center. That is where it is at this point in time. After I receive the laptop back from the service center I will give it a more thorough evaluation and follow-up comments on the servicing it received. For now, I give the laptop only three stars. Look for an update in a month...
