This Toshiba Satellite is a fantastic, sub-$1000 computer. It hits all the right notes and should be considered by anyone looking for a responsive desktop replacement machine.

PROS
• SCREEN: First and foremost, the screen is absolutely gorgeous. As a design professional, I rely on color and clarity to make critical decisions in my work and I spend my days staring at monitors and laptop screens from all the big, computer makers. This is by FAR the best screen I've looked at on a laptop (and that includes Macs). I can't believe how crisp text is: Web pages practically sing.
• FAST: This system is optimized for Windows 10 and it shows. I've found nary a delay over the week that I've used it.
• KEYBOARD: The haptics of the Satellite's keyboard are spot on. While the full-size keyboard does mean that, on my lap, my right arm is stretched a bit further across my body than I'd like, it's not a problem on tabletops. The keys are perfectly spaced and the keyboard is quiet.
• PORTS: While many computer makers are moving away from ports as they release laptops, Toshiba took the opposite tack. If you have something you need to plug into your laptop, there are plenty of options. When I first fired up the machine, I was delighted to find a rare, built-in Ethernet port. I used it to quickly download Windows 10 Pro and install it on my machine. With three USB ports, and SD card slot, Ethernet, HDMI, and even a media drive (!), you're set to up- and download your content (which I find I'm doing a lot, because I love this screen!).
• QUIET: This machine is made for media and, as a result, it runs quietly.Read more ›

Gorgeous Screen & Great Performance in a Very Lightweight Package

I was fortunate to receive this laptop for review purposes and decided to test it against my work-provided laptop. For those interested in specs, this Toshiba features a 5th generation Intel core i7 processor (5500u 2.4ghz version), 12gb of ram, and Windows 10 64bit. My work laptop is a fairly high-end Dell computer that is less than a year old (and cost close to $1500 when purchased 10 months ago) and has a 4th generation Intel core i7 processor (4510u 2.0ghz version), 8gb of ram, and Windows 8 64bit. For fun, I also included in the test my wife's slightly older HP laptop with an 3rd generation Intel core i3 processor (3130 2.6ghz version), 4gb of ram, and Windows 8 64bit.

First, I tested the startup time. The Toshiba was consistently fast, averaging about 13 seconds from power on to the sign-in screen and about 12 seconds from sign-in to the home screen appeared. The Dell was close behind, taking a few seconds longer to bring up the sign in screen and being about the same speed from sign-in til the homescreen. The HP was a good bit slower, taking 35 seconds to get to the sign-in screen and another 15 to the homescreen. In any case, the Toshiba gets up and running really fast, a testament to both the processor speed and the efficiency of Windows 10.

Next, I tested the speed of each laptop performing a fairly demanding computing task. I don't do gaming, but I do use my laptop to do audio and video editing. I installed the newest version of a video editing program on each computer and had them edit and render (produce a finished video) the same project. The Toshiba won the race, finishing the project in 7 minutes 19 seconds. The Dell was fairly close, finishing in 7 minutes 59 seconds. The HP lagged in at 9 minutes 12 seconds.Read more ›

First Id like to say I'm not an inexperienced tech user. I have a bachelors in Network Administration and Cyber Security and work as a NOC technician. Not that that matters but I hope that gives this review some credibility. So Here are some things that you should know before you actually buy this laptop. First off for 950 dollars it is definitely worth the money that your paring. Compared to some of the other laptops out there this one is very reasonable. Unfortunately I found some things that I really don't like. Amazon was not very clear on some of the features that this particular computer had to offer.

FIRST: The memory is not upgradable. I know, some of you might wonder why you would ever need to upgrade from 12 GB. Well sometimes RAM does go bad. and to replace it you would either need to be a experienced computer tech or send it in because from what I understand it is embedded into the motherboard
SECOND: The I7 Processor is actually a mobile dual core and not a quad core that you would expect from a 5th generation I7 processor
THIRD: You will not get 5G from this laptop unless you upgrade the NIC. It has old tech and does not support AC and 5G.
FOURTH: Its battery is not replaceable by normal means similar to the memory.
FIFTH: Due to the fact that it has a new OS there are many games that are not compatible any more. I am going right back to installing windows seven because first I don't like the organization of the file system that windows ten has to offer and second I cant play any of my old games.
SIXTH: the mouse pad is slippery and not what you would expect you have to increase the mouse movement speed or use a corded mouse at least that is what it was for me.Read more ›
