From Zero to (almost) Hero in about 15 minutes

To set up my experience and biases - I use Mac and PC computers and laptops daily, but my personal computers at home are almost all Macs now. I just love their hardware designs, and I really like how cool and quiet they are, including my MacBook Air. Well, unless it's gaming, and then it sounds like hurricane...and it isn't very good at games, either. That's where this bad boy comes in. Before I get too far into this, let me summarize: amazing graphics, attractive and comfortable hardware design, pretty quiet and fairly cool for most usages, can get hot and loud when gaming (no surprise), the hard drive is a weak spot - and this gets a recommendation from me because of it's performance overall.

I'll discuss the "zero to hero" first impressions near the end, but I want to talk about what I think are the more relevant aspects first along with how I'd rate them individually.

HARDWARE DESIGN: 5 Stars. Toshiba really did a super nice job with this one. I'm used to HP laptops, and this Satellite blows them away. The wrist rest area is perfectly sized for me, but the front edges can be a bit uncomfortable if you are slouched down and typing at a shallow angle. Speaking of typing, the keys are easy to type on with a great feel and spacing to them, and the whole thing is lightweight enough to be comfortable sitting on my lap as I type in my living room chair. The brushed metal lid has a great aesthetic to it, and the black plastic sides and back are well made and compliment the metal lid. I didn't like the slightly shiny look of the keys at first, but they've really grown on me. The one thing that I'd knock (outside of the front edges) is the optical drive, which is integrated very well into the side wall, but it feel pretty cheap when you eject it.Read more ›

Generally good! Just pointy as hell.

I just got this laptop earlier this week after doing a buttload of research and love it so far. Context: I'm a graduate student who is using this laptop as a desktop replacement and traveling with it frequently.

PROS:
- sturdily built - there's lots of aluminum and feels more durable and fancy than your average plastic laptop. I feel good about schlepping this.
- decent battery life - I've gotten ~4-5 hours with the screen dimmed, which I'm happy with. Battery life is pretty important to me since I'm using it without a power cord in class, and it was hard to do much better in this price range with this screen size and with a dedicated graphics card.
- good weight - given the size of the screen, this laptop is surprisingly light. Obviously not super comfortable to tote around like some of the 13" ones. But we checked out other 15.6" laptops and this was definitely on the lighter more compact end.
- great-looking wide screen - I love this screen! Even running it dim to save battery it looks fine. Everything looks clear and crisp. (As an aside: I got a Dell with a 4k screen that I had to return, and it made me deliberately opt NOT to get one because it's not supported by a lot of stuff yet and it adds more work for you messing with the size of everything because the resolution is too high.) I also love that this Toshiba spends its 15.6" in width. As someone who needs to split screens frequently and work with data sets, this really helps and is a big upgrade from my previous 14" screen.
- quiet awesome keyboard - I am a fan of the flat chiclet style keyboard. It's also pretty quiet to type on which is nice, given that I type a lot in class and after my husband goes to sleep. The keyboard feels good to type on and is responsive.Read more ›

This Laptop stinks: Couldn't get much slower without moving at all.

UPDATE: While I am writing this I have it plugged in electrically, other wise it will take 10 minutes just to do this as it is even slower with just the battery. I see that so far 5 people that neg voted my review. That's fine, but the truth is the truth and this laptop stinks. I'm downgrading it to it one star. I tried loading google again and it had been over 2 hours and still very little progress so I quit the download. This thing is running at the speed that dial up did and I'm not exaggerating. Either I got a bad computer with big issues or this is the worse computer I have ever had. You can't use it for gaming either because it won't even open the game to play, it can't even load it and it's just a game on Facebook. I did try to watch a show and it keep stopping. It took 30 minutes to view 3 minutes of movie time. The more you use this laptop, the slower it gets.

I gave it 3 stars because you can watch programs and movies in HD. I wanted it for that and also for gaming since it said it would be so much faster. It wouldn't let me download Google Chrome and put an icon for it for easy access. I'm not about to spend 3 hours with tech support to figure it out and no one should have to. It had an area where it said you could restore it to Windows 7, which is not the operating system it came with, but then when you try to, of course there are no files in the computer to let you do that so I don't even know why that option is even there. The picture quality is no better or worse than any $400 laptop, The speed it responds with to your requests is not any faster than my old desktop, which is about 2 years (or more) old, has Windows 7 and only about half the storage and ram that this one has.Read more ›
