Very fast, thin laptop, wide screen, great display and runs numerous software packages at the same time very well

I'm a software developer and I needed a fast computer I could take with me so I can work while sitting in various coffee shops.
I found this one at Office Depot on sale for $699. It has the i7 and 8Gb ram and it flies. As a developer I need many utilities and large programs open at one time and this computer can handle them as I expect.
This has Win8.1 installed and I found it to be very similar to Win7 and have no problem with it even though I've heard Win8 was terrible.
It also has a touch screen which I don't use much since i use mouse and keyboard, but for some functionality in Win8 it is nice : like when you want to go back to the previous app you can swipe the screen from the left to right.
I was also worried about the new keyboard style - the press-button type keys - but they are not bad either and I'm amazed and happy with the keyboard. The touchpad is nice with flat buttons for left & right clicks. I have a wireless mouse attached and the touchpad software has functionality that turns off the touchpad when wireless mouse is attached.
One thing I found odd is that to use the F1-F12 (function keys) I have to hold down on the FN key. If you just press the F11, for example and expect the browser window to go fullscreen, it does not. The laptop instead thinks you are choosing one of the built-in Toshiba functions. This may be a setting I can change, but I haven't looked it up yet.
There is a fan port on the right side of the laptop which is where I place my wireless trackball and when the laptop starts heating up then warm air blows on my hand and that's slightly annoying. Wish the fan port could've been out the back.
The built-in media reader works well as do the three USB ports. Have not tried the HDMI yet.
Over all, I think it is a very good value at $699 to get a quadcore i7 which runs this fast.

Can't Beat the Price

I got this product on prime. Package was mailed by FedEx. No signature required. Packaging was very good. Product came in without any damage. Box was sealed. Device is brand new.

ABOUT PRODUCT:

I got this laptop for $770. I looked around in other retailers and no other product could have this i7 processor (4710hq) at that price range. I only play gmod, minecraft, and attack on titan for gaming and it ran those games flawlessly. For heavy gaming, upgrading the graphics card may be necessary. This has an integrated intel 4600 hd. Good for students who will need the power for computing. Way too much power for basic tasks like word processing and web browsing though, it's more suited for coding, video editing, etc.

If you want the device to go faster, install a ssd. RAM is not user upgradable. However, if 8GB of RAM suits your needs, this is for you.
CPU surprisingly doesn't heat up a lot. It's cooler than my AMD A8, which performs slightly worse than an i3.

FUN UPDATE: My computer did a cold shut down and would no longer reboot. It's not Amazon or the seller's fault. I got a defective model from Toshiba. Don't be scared, it really is a good, nice-spec'ed device. I returned it because I didn't want to deal with Toshiba customer service. Amazon was really good about refunding my item though.

Great for everything! A++++

Im not sure where the bad reviews are going from. One guy gave it 1-star because he claims its a "bad brand". Its not. Not even close.
This laptop is very fast and easy to operate. Ive had mine for close to 4 months, no problems at all. I thought that not having a cd rom would be a bother but I have yet to find myself needing to use a cd, so not a problem. Dont listen to the troll reviews. This is an AWESOME laptop.

Pretty good value

I bought this laptop at Office Depot/Max for $699 after returning to Amazon an SB55-5289 that was sold as a 5258 (third party vender) and then also returned a used 5258 -from Amazons warehouse deals- that had some glitches. They are all pretty much the same except the others did not have touch screens (which I did not especially want) and the 5289 does not have a backlit keyboard.

I have owned this laptop for over a month now and it has performed well. I was especially drawn to the I7 processor in all of these laptops at this price, with the 5273n being the best value of the three IMO.

I disabled the touch screen in device manager since I use this laptop closed at all times sitting immediately in front of and plugged into my TV (direct HDMI cable) using it as my display. Having the touch screen enabled while closed caused bad problems with the display -too screwy to describe but it is easily disabled.

The following is true for all three of these laptops:
I did not want a machine with Windows 8.1 but decided to bite the bullet and buy this laptop. I spent the first several hours setting it up to work like Windows 7 minus the much more efficient Start menu of past OS's. While I have learned this system rather quickly and it runs fine, mostly, I still would not recommend Windows 8.1 to anyone based on principle alone. I still believe the release of Windows 8 was the stupidest move Microsoft has ever made, well one of the stupidest, and their attempt at moving (forcing) the market rather than serving the market (my opinion) was arrogant to say the least.

While I use a remote wireless mouse and keyboard I did find some user issues with the keyboard and mouse pad on this laptop.Read more ›
