I had one TP550LA for 2 months. It looks smart! I like the metallic silver with a black Scrabble-tile keyboard, and the dark top. It is good for me propping up to watch TV, for using on a desk or for sitting on the sofa.

It is really a powerful computer. The CPU provides enough performance power to handle everyday tasks.

The screen is excellent in both brightness and contrast. The punchy speakers are amazing. Bass drums and the mid-range and high-end are well-balanced – neither dominates, and neither sounds too tinny.

The price is excellent compared to its rivals too.

Good laptop with a few small misses.

So far, I have no regrets on this purchase. You have to realize what you are buying, though. This is an entry to mid level laptop, and expecting it to perform like a high end machine is not realistic. However, it has plenty of power for everyday tasks and even for some moderately heavy ones. The battery life is pretty good at around 5 hours or so. Surprisingly, I found that I use the convertible feature more than I expected. There are times where folding the keyboard back to use as a stand is very handy (such as when inquisitive toddlers will not keep their hands off of the keyboard). There are a couple of cautions to mention regarding its usefulness as a tablet. The first is the size. While I like having a big screen, if you are planning on using this as a portable tablet, you will most likely find a 15" screen much to big, bulky, and awkward for carrying around like an ipad or similar device. The second issue is with the screen itself. This screen is the most evident "entry level" feature of this device. The viewing angles are terrible and make it next to impossible to use as a tablet. You have to be looking directly at the screen to get a good picture. Any angle at all begins to degrade the clarity of the screen. You might not have realized this, but you very seldom look at a tablet or hand held device at a perfectly straight angle. You will notice it when you try to use this as a tablet. All of this makes it sound like a negative review, however, I would still highly recommend this laptop. As I said before, you just have to be aware of what you are getting. The convertible capability was just a nice bonus for me that didn't really cost any more, so why not?Read more ›

Smokey screen

This is a nice, powerful laptop but far too bulky and heavy to use as designed. Propping it on your lap or knees will soon find you in pain because this thing weighs almost 5 lbs. I had imagined this being a nice combo of a tablet and a computer, but it's just too heavy.

The screen is not crisp and bright, it almost seems as if there is a smokey film over the screen. I expected a vibrant display, especially considering it is 15 inches big. But instead I got something that I am constantly trying to adjust to get even a decent picture. Movies looked too dark, same with YouTube and my photographs. My 5 year old HP Pavilion had a brighter display.

I did upgrade to Windows 10 but Cortana could never hear me speaking, so I had to type everything in-what's the point of that? The sound coming out of the speakers was very poor, definitely need external speakers with this, which hinders the portability even more. I decided to return this in the end, it just wasn't worth the premium price.
