This is a terrific convertible laptop, and if not for two issues, I would have rated it five stars. The two issues are: 1) The keyboard does not work in some advanced maintenance and troubleshooting situations such as when in safe mode, the advanced startup screen, or when trying to boot up with a Windows PE recovery disk and 2) Tablet functionality is not optimized when using traditional applications such as Firefox, Microsoft Word and Internet Explorer. More about these particular issues latter, but first some basics.

Keep in mind I am not a power user. I use a computer mostly for web browsing, email, Microsoft Office and photo editing with Photoshop. So I am reviewing this computer from that perspective.

WHAT’S IN THE BOX -
The T300 Chi comes in a fancy, beautifully made charcoal grey presentation type box. Inside, In addition to the tablet and keyboard dock, are:

-- 1 Micro USB to standard USB adapter. This lets you attach any standard USB device to the laptop via its USB 3.0 port.
-- 1 Micro USB to Micro USB cable to charge the keyboard via the tablet’s micro USB port.
-- 1 very nice microfiber cleaning cloth
-- 1 long velcro-type cable tie
-- 1 power adapter
-- 4 very brief and skimpy leaflets for warranty information, battery safety, and intros to the tablet and the dock. There is no user guide, but there is a pdf one preinstalled and you can always download one from the Asus website.

PROS:

-- Beautiful full HD 12.5” diagonal IPS screen that’s great for image editing. Colors are clear, bright and crisp, and because of the IPS technology, they don’t fade in and out when changing viewing angles. The dpi is about 170.Read more ›

Outstanding screen; solid performance; great form factor; couple of irritations

Bottom line: Overall, this is an excellent laptop/tablet setup. The screen is simply gorgeous, the speed is excellent, and it easily morphs between a laptop and a tablet. Windows 8 can be a bit of a pain, as can some of the hardware design quirks, but overall, I’m finding it to be a solid performer. It's a good choice if you want a tablet but don't want to give up the functionality of a laptop.

Full review: It’s been a couple of years since I tried out a laptop/tablet “convertible” type system, and things have certainly improved for the better. This Asus is a fully functional system in both its tablet and laptop modes.

I was a little disappointed when I first opened the box since it was not packaged in a “high end” (ala Apple) manner. It was packed well in terms of protection, but it was pretty utilitarian. I also thought it was unusual that there was no setup or “welcome” sheet/poster packed with the hardware.

The utilitarian feel went away once I started using it. The overall fit and finish is excellent – very solid feeling. It is thinner than I expected – folded up it’s just a bit thicker than my older tablets. The tablet portion alone is sleek and solid. You do notice the weight when using just the tablet, but it’s not bad. My only quibble is that the tablet case is slippy in hand. The keyboard has non-slip feet on it that keep it well-planted, but when using just the tablet, it’s slidy. I’m shopping for a case or skin to help with the hand feel of the tablet.

Setup was straightforward, with Win 8 going through the usual setup process of a couple of minutes to get the basics taken care of, then an hour or so of having it fetch and install all the needed OS updates. I used Win 8 for a bit when it came out, but mostly work with Win 7 machines.Read more ›

Good Hybrid, But Not Without Issues

I bought this unit to function as a work laptop and for the most part I am impressed with it.
Pros:
1. Great internal specs for a tablet. I love using it and it never feels sluggish like some of the Intel Atom tablets I've used recently.
2. Very stylish and thin, even when paired with the included keyboard dock.
3. Backed by the ASUS accidental damage protection warranty.
4. The price is great (I paid under $500 for mine).

Cons:
1. Battery life is poor in my opinion. My 13" Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 easily lasts all day where this one seems to struggle to make it through a full day.
2. The wireless wouldn't connect to my SonicWALL NSA220 in wireless-N mode, but as soon as I drop it to B/G mode it connects just fine. Not sure if this is an issue with SonicWALL or the tablet, but it was a frustrating issue on a new out-of-box unit.
3. Lack of full connectivity ports can make it difficult to support in a business environment, but that's the price of making it thinner than a MacBook Air.

The A/C adapter is also a gripe, but I have mixed feelings about it. It doesn't use a Micro-USB connection which is nice so I can charge it while leaving a device plugged into the Micro-USB port, but it means I can't use a standard Micro-USB cable to hook it up to an external battery pack. First-world problems I guess.

Overall I would recommend this device for anyone looking for a casual device as the price is right, specs are solid, and it's just damn sexy.
