Sturdy nice quality, works great! Highly recommend!

This is a really nice external optical drive! The construction and materials are superior. I’ve seen plenty of drives that flex or are so cheap and plastic feeling you feel like you wasted your money. That is not the case here at all. It feels very close to the nice sturdy quality of one you would receive for a Macintosh computer.

I wanted to give this product a good testing out so I tried it on as many operating systems as I could get my hands on. OSX 10.7.5, Windows 7 x32 and x64, Windows 8.1, Windows 10 on a mix of laptops desktops and a Surface Pro 3 with Windows 8.1. I had great success! The drive was recognized in both USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports. It installed and was recognized right away. I tested with reading both a CD-R and a DVD+R disk and it read both with no issue. I tested burning a cd as well and it worked like a charm! I did confirm that the disks worked in other machines after burning. On the mac the drive shows up as a disk. If there is no disk in the drive you do not see it on the computer. Once the disk is in it shows up and is readable. You can eject the disk and it no longer shows up on the Macintosh desktop.

I’m super pleased with the quality, looks, compactness and over all function of this unit. I was given the opportunity to purchase this product at a special price for me to test and give unbiased, honest feedback. I would (and have!) recommend it to a friend for sure.

A REASONABLY PRICED CD-RW/DVD-ROM EXTERNAL USB DRIVE - DVD-RW COMPATIBILITY NEITHER CLAIMED NOR CAPABLE

The VicTsing USB External DVD-R Combo CD-RW Burner Drive incorporates a Matsushita UJDA-740 slim line notebook Combo CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive. That drive currently sells for $55 as a refurbished unit without the drive enclosure. As such, the represented list price of $60 is reasonable and the advertised price of $21.99 would seem quite reasonable. The provided USB powered enclosure includes a standard USB cable and a second USB cable with a power connector at one end. All tests were performed without having to plug in the second USB cable.

As indicated in the accompanying two page manual, my Windows 7 Acer Netbook recognized the drive shortly after plugging in the standard USB cable. As advertised, the drive played a commercial DVD movie without incident. Also as claimed, the drive successfully wrote to a CD-RW disk. This drive neither claims nor is capable of writing to a DVD-RW disk. It’s ability to write to DVD-R or DVD+R media was not tested. Since the internal Matsushita UJDA-740 drive is listed as a CD-RW/DVD-ROM unit, I strongly suspect it only has the ability to read, as opposed to writing, DVD-R and DVD+R media.

I’ve included a short explanatory video to illustrate the aforementioned tests. While I received this drive as compensation for an objective analysis, my reviews routinely are far more thorough than most compensated reviews. Accordingly, if you found the review helpful, please so indicate.

Very Slim & Compact, Easy to Use, Plug & Go, Portable, Great Quality...

This is an awesome little External CD Drive. It works perfectly and couldn't be easier to use.

This drive simply plugs into a USB port and you're good to go. Nothing to install or instructions to follow. Plug and go.

This drive is very slim, compact and lightweight. It's very portable and can be stored in the small box that it comes in.

The drive looks nice, certainly not an eye sore or anything that you get sick of seeing. The quality is great and it works exactly as it should.

Whether you are wanting this external because you don't have an internal one or your internal one broke or you want this in addition to your internal drive, this is a great choice. As long as you have a USB port, you should be good. I think it's great and would highly recommend it.

Excellent Ultra Slim DVD player/writer!

This is an awesome external and portable plug and play DVD player. I have Windows 10 and it works fine, no software needed. Just plugged in with the attached USB cord and I was setup in seconds. This works on laptops and desktops and runs on USB 2.0 compatible with most USB ports. I love how this doesn’t need another power supply cord as many other DVD player devices need. I watched a few DVD’s and had no issues what so ever. The videos streamed perfectly and the speed of the DVD ROM is 8X while CD’s is 24X speed. The burner has fast speeds as well from 8X to 6X for Dual Layers. I normally burn on 2X anyways, so I never really test the speed of a burner. I just like DVD burners that don’t give me any toasters. This does a good job of burning at low speeds and the playback is excellent.

PROS:

The design is wonderful, very sleek and slim profile. The eject button only works when it’s plugged in, so don’t have to worry about accidentally popping it open when carrying it around in a laptop case or bag. There’s non-slip bases to the DVD player so it won’t slip off any surfaces. The design is great and light-weight, which makes this very portable. Nice top finish that has a brushed effect that also prevents it from slipping out of your hands. The DVD drive doesn’t get hot and stays cool and quiet when in use. This is perfect for notebooks that don’t have a DVD player installed, this will do the trick and not take much space. I highly recommend this DVD drive. I received this product at a discount in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.

Doesn't seem to work on Mac OS El Capitan (version 10.11)

Does not work on my Retina 2014 iMac with El Cap (version 10.11) OS. System does not recognize it when attached. I'll be returning it to Amazon
