Screen problem

I'm giving this laptop a provisional review of one star. It arrived looking good, but on its third boot-up, the screen began showing visual "static" in the form of little, jumping lines. As I worked with programs, the "static" became more pronounced and the screen would occasionally flicker and jump. At one point, the screen became completely unreadable, and I had to hit the power switch to first shut off, and then restore the screen.

I'm working with Asus service on trying to resolve the problem. When we've come to a resolution, I'll revisit this review and, I hope, adjust it positively.

Update 7/15/15: After being walked through a few "textbook" problem solutions by a pleasant tech rep, it was agreed that the laptop would be returned to Asus for repair. It was satisfactorily repaired and, so far, seems to be working reasonably well.
However, unlike other laptop and cell phone returns for defects that I've experienced, Asus did NOT offer me a prepaid shipping label. Therefore the costs of packaging (FedEx talked me off my home-made packaging) and ground shipment were on me. Asus did ship it back to me at their expense (thankfully). Had I known the total cost at the time of purchase, I'd have decided on another product

So, despite the laptop now working satisfactorily, I am deducting one star for purchasing a defective product and two stars for Asus's having me pay to ship it to them to cure the defect. My original one-star review is amended to two stars.

I've owned this laptop for about a month now and it works well. I wanted a small machine to run Linux and this fit the bill perfectly. I now have Xubuntu 15.04 running after an incredibly easy install. Everything work out of the box (for the most part), including the WiFi, printing (over wireless no less), and even the touch screen. This is a testament to both ASUS hardware and Linux software as to how far we've come with open source.
That said, there are a couple of caveats:
First, I had to go with the latest Xubuntu release because I couldn't get things running with SecureBoot disabled. This does use UEFI firmware, so any distro you pick will need to implement shim.
Second, the trackpad is a bit big/too sensitive for my liking. It could be that I have big hands, though the laptop is already pretty small. Either way this means that I will be typing sometimes and accidentally click somewhere else on the screen. Not a deal breaker by any means though. This is primarily the reason for the -1 star because I realize not everyone will be switching away from Windows 8 and this problem is moreso with the hardware.

Overall, this is a quality laptop. It is fast enough for day-to-day stuff like web browsing, email, and the occasional game. The battery life is solid at around 4-5 hours of casual use.The touch screen is somewhat wasted on me, but I imagine it would make navigating Windows 8 much easier. If you are looking for a lightweight travel laptop, this fits the bill.

Great Laptop for the price. Wieght is light with 5hr battery life. Its fast for everyday tasks and is even sufficient for low end games. The resolution on the small screen works well. Does not overheat as much as other laptops. If youre looking for a laptop for heavy gaming however, you might want to increase your price range.

Low cost, meets needs, but could have been designed better.

For the price, don't expect speed. It is sufficient for my needs, which are mainly internet usage and MS Office applications. The touch pad is flimsy and tricky. The sound, whether through speakers or headphones, is very tinny. The touch screen is nice, but quite useless as you cannot fold back screen into a tablet. As such, I never use it. I also question the engineering master mind: 1) no Bluetooth, but a VGA port. Really? VGA is yesteryear technology and both HDMI and VGA is simply redundant. Bluetooth would have been so cheap to incorporate. 2) HDMI is good, but why not a Mini HDMI? 3) Why the "hump" on the bottom of laptop? Is it really needed? Make the netbook flat.

I was at first disappointed by the presence of programs that I don't want (bloatware). I reinstalled the operating system, which may account for why there appears to be very little bloatware. The computer is a bit slow, but much nicer than I expected for a computer that costs about a fifth of my everyday laptop.
