This documents installing a 0.1µH Goertz inductor to a Martin Logan
CLS IIz electrostatic speaker. Additionally, the flat/soft switch
was bypassed at the circuit board. This is covered in
another page.
This set of speakers was already modified with
Bybee Quantum Purifiers
.

Goertz Audio claims electrical and sonic advantages over
wire-wound inductors, see the

These were sourced from

NOTE: This hardware potentially contains high voltages!
Do not work on an energized unit! Exercise extreme caution with a recently
de-energized unit. The units I worked on were de-energized/cold
(both AC and audio input) for at least 24 hours prior to
modification. Work safely. Consider yourself warned.

This is a comparison of the stock 0.1µH inductor with the Goertz
copper foil inductor. The Goertz inductors are a little larger, but
there is ample room for installation in the CLS cabinet.
The first thing to do is prep the inductor leads. The leads are flat
and several inches long. What I did was to clip them flat where they
would enter the board, and then I added a short (1") length of silver
wire tucked into a point formed with the copper foil. Crimp this tight
and solder. Next I dressed the foil leads with Kapton tape. Kapton
tape resists high temperatures and voltages. I didn't want anything to
short.
This is the unit to be modified, this already has the Bybees installed.
Remove the board.
De-solder the inductor.
You will need some way to secure the much larger inductor. I chose to
put a zip-tie through the original holes and trap another pair of zip
ties that will hold the Goertz inductor.
Solder the inductor in place and zip in place.
Side-view of the board.
Carefully replace the board back in the chassis.
Before you close up, ensure that everything has been reconnected, no
leads are shorted, no clipped wire ends remain and that no tools are
left behind.
