Hi folks,
This is a follow-up posting of my previous message about available
research assistantship at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. As An Hai
said, please disseminate this announcement as widely as possible. Even
if your friend is unlikely to be interested in it, he/she might know
someone who is.
Now, in case you don't feel the urgent need to offset the overwhelming
number of Chinese and Indian students in the States, the below half-real
half-fiction Q & A should give you some burning incentives to come to
this school to pursue your degree.
Question #1: So what's the big deal about living in Milwaukee,
Wisconsin?
Answer. Wisconsin is famous for beer, cheese, and, of course the Green
Bay Packers - the biggest deal for Wisconsin. Even a guy who is a soccer
fan to the core like myself can get excited about it once in a while.
If someone brags with me about his/her degree from MIT or Harvard, i
usually gently remind the geek how the mighty Packers beat the crap out
of the Patriots on the 31st Superbowl. And if you prefer basketball, and
think that the Milwaukee Bucks are a joke of the NBA, then just hop into
a car heading south, and in no time you will be in the United Center
chanting for Michael Jordan and the Bulls as they make jokes out of the
rest of the league (I always have that certain goose-bump when it comes
to the introduction of the starting lineup that features the Badman, the
Rodman, and the Superman).
Question #2: How about my potential advisor? Is he any good?
Answer. Yes he surely is a very good advisor. Besides, he has a special
affections for exotic countries. E.g., right now he is in Bangkok,
Thailand, visiting a university here. Okay, i can hear your prompt
frustration: "now, what on earth does that have anything to do with
me?". The answer - from a Patpong temporary resident - is that he
usually takes a student with him, so if you are the lucky person, you
will have a chance to know that exotic country. (Looks like he is now
eyeing Cairo, Egypt.)
Question #3: How about the Vn-ese community in Milwaukee?
Answer. Not very large, but a very nice and cosy one. Take, for example,
Ms Minh Hien, a graduate student at the Dept. of Romantic Affairs. Am i
doing a redundant job here introducing the queen of vnsa netvillage?
Anyway, Ms Hien is looking for a romantic soulmate who would like to
watch the sunset on the gorgeous beach of Lake Michigan (never mind that
the picture also features floating bodies of dead fish near the shore).
So, come on guys, it's your excellent chance to meet her in real life
(just a quick tip: if you have any temporal and metrical model for the
intensity of love, it'd better be monotonically increasing).
Or, for example, Mr. Phiem, also a member of the village (we often brag
about the fact that 5 of the first 6 vnsa members, including 2 admins,
are from UWM, or UWM alumni). Mr Phiem is a tireless hacker, and
well-versed in a dozen of programming languages (he is allegedly the
mastermind of the notorious intrusion into CIA's computer system, which
changes its webpage to read: Central Agency of Stupidity). So if you
have any computer question, be it about Java or Indonesia (you know what
i'm saying, Phiem), feel free to contact him.
And last, but certainly not least, the writer of these lines. (ahem ...
how unfortunate a task to talk about oneself!) Although having developed
a wealth of quirky tastes as a consequence of living abroad too much (he
enjoys the surrealist paintings of Salvador Dali, listens to the - some
would say - whining, mute horn of Miles Davis, and has developed a
chaotic theory for modeling human love, for which sadly no publisher
has offered a contract), he is generally described as a shy, but cool
guy. More importantly, he is still single and ready to mingle. So, come
on gals, what are you waiting for?
Okay, that's it for now.
Cheers, Vu~.

P.S. In case you forget, it's 1st of April again. So please don't take
my babbling too seriously :)
Have a good day!
