Xinhua English Newswire

Vietnam plans to generate 30-32 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity
by the year 2000, nearly doubling the 1996 output, newspapers here
reported today.

To meet this goal, it plans to build a network of hydro, thermal, and
gas electric plants.

The first gas power plant, located in the southern central province of
Ba Ria-Vung Tau, has been operating since March 15, with a capacity of
300 megawatts in its first phase with two turbines.

A hydro-electric power plant is currently under construction in the
central highland province of Gia Lai.

Vietnam has estimated that by the year 2020, the full capacity of
power projects utilizing traditional energy resources such as hydro
power, coal and gas will only meet about 70-80 percent of the its
energy requirements.
