Prime Minister Vo Van Kiet ordered that construction of a section of the
North-South Highway linking Hoa Binh, northwest of the Red River Delta,
with Road 14 in the Central Highlands must be completed by the year 2000. 

A delegation from the Chinese Communist Party's Inspection Department
visited Vietnam from April 14 to 20. A Vietnamese delegation led by Major
General Dao Trong Lich, commander of Military Zone 2, visited China last
week to discuss border control with their counterparts. 

The area of agricultural land will be increased to 9.0 to 9.5 million
hectares, representing 27% to 28.7% of the country's total area, by the
year 2010 from the 1995 figure of 8 million hectares, according to a
governmental report. 

33 domestic and 13 foreign companies including Acer, Compaq, Apple, IBM,
Intel, Hewlett Packard and Microsoft have registered to take part in the
Vietnam Information Technology Forum HCM'97 to be held from April 23-26 at
Kasati Exhibition Center, 270A Ly Thuong Kiet Street, District 10, HCMC. 

On April 15, a wild elephant from Chu Yang Sin Mountain, Krong Bong
destroyed food crops in Ea Trum Commune and killed a 56-year-old woman.
After receiving permission of the Government, the province killed the
elephant on April 16. 

Vietnamese Dishes Weeks were held in the over 70-year-old Majestic Hotel
in HCMC from April 6 to May 16 with a view to introducing some 170
traditional dishes of the three regions of Vietnam. Since inauguration
day, the hotel has received some 30 people per day. A portion costs US$11.
