[MATH] Random bar

Hello Math and CS wizards,

        This weekend, my club discussed the following problem:

"A bar is broken at random in two places. Find the average 
size of the smallest of the middle-sized and the largest 
pices."

        Can computer simulation be useful in solving this 
problem? or only math can do?

        Any idea?
