Foreign PC manufacturers target domestic market

Foreign computer companies are turning to the manufacture of PCs and PC
components for the domestic market.
Three 100% foreign-owned ventures are presently operating at the Tan
Thuan Export Processing Zone in Ho Chi Minh City: the first, a venture
with the Askei Co., Ltd. of Japan, produces and installs CD drives; the
second, also a venture with Askei Co., is currently under construction
and will manufacture PC components; the third is a venture with CIS of
Taiwan, producing software disks.
Fujitsu of Japan has put into operation a plant to produce electronic
chip printing boards at the Bien Hoa Industrial Park 2. The company has
also exported its products.
Genotel of Hong Kong has been licensed to set up an intranet to operate
in Ho Chi Minh City.
Vietnam is currently enjoying an annual IT growth rate of 30%. This
year, the industry is expected to reach turn over between 130 and 140
million USD.
