Taiwan-quake

TAIPEI: At least 1,712 people were killed and 4,005 injured as Taiwan
was devastated by its most powerful earthquake this century, sparking a
desperate rescue to free hundreds buried alive. 

Timor

DILI, East Timor: East Timorese celebrated as international troops took
control of the centre of their burned-out capital but the force's
commander said it would be weeks before the territory was secure. 

Yugo-opposition

BELGRADE: Tens of thousands of people streamed into the streets of
Belgrade and other Serbian cities to demand Yugoslav President Slobodan
Milosevic ouster in an orchestrated campaign set to intensify over this
week. 

NIreland

BELFAST: Northern Ireland's two major rival parties agreed to meet again
after holding their first face-to-face talks since they missed a July
deadline for setting up a power-sharing government. 

US-economy

WASHINGTON: A new record trade deficit reported raised fears of an
eroding dollar and higher interest rates that analysts said could hurt
the stock market and the economy as a whole. 

Russia-Chechnya

MOSCOW: The president of Chechnya warned new terrorist bombings could
shake Russia should the Kremlin fail to soften its line in the Caucasus
as Moscow police reported finding tonnes of explosives in fresh security
raids.
