MOSCOW: Russian Defense Minister Igor Sergeyev warned that plans for a
ground attack on Chechnya were ready as an intensified bombing campaign
against the rebel republic entered its fourth day.

DILI, East Timor: International peacekeepers urged pro-Jakarta militias
to disarm ahead of Monday's change of command in East Timor, as
Indonesian troops torched city buildings in an angry farewell to the
territory they occupied for 24 years. 

Yugo-opposition-rally

BELGRADE: About 50,000 people marched through central Belgrade in the
latest demonstration demanding an end to the regime of Yugoslav
President Slobodan Milosevic.

LISBON: The central Angolan town of Bailundo has been almost entirely
destroyed and hundreds of civilians have been killed in fighting between

TAIPEI: Two brothers emerged alive from the rubble of their apartment
block 130 hours after it was razed by Taiwan's earthquake as a powerful
aftershock brought more death and destruction to the island.

ANKARA: Nationwide prison riots in Turkey left 10 inmates dead and 18
injured, and 93 prison guards held hostage, the justice ministry said.

HEBRON, West Bank: Palestinians in the south of the West Bank said they
had received orders from the Israeli army confiscating massive areas of
land for a military training area.

TEHRAN: The director of Iran's leading moderate daily Neshat called on
reformist President Mohammad Khatami to intervene after the conservative
courts sentenced him to a suspended 30-month jail term and confirmed the
closure of his paper.
