Amstat Online Editor and ASA
The ASA Staff handles aspects of amstat.org distinct from the Editor,
including membership, member services, meetings, continuing education,
Center for Statistical Education, and employment. The ASA Electronic
Communications Committee mediates electronic policy issues.
The following relationships between the Editor and ASA units deserve
particular attention:
Journal Staff work directly with Editors of journals in the
well-established review and publication process. As journals move
online, the Web Editor can work with the journal Editors and ASA Staff
to coordinate activities and efforts. Many aspects of the
professional journals, such as JASA, will likely remain intact,
becoming accessible on the web as downloadable articles in standard
form (e.g. PDF).
However, newer ways of presenting information, such as hypertext and
extra color graphics (including video and virtual reality) can enhance
the content and timeliness of traditional page formatted material. In
addition, the Editor may work with journal editors to develop archives
for supporting data and source code, as well as for draft preprints of
submitted papers.
The ASA Staff will handle the pricing and marketing of publications on
the Internet, under advisement of the Electronic Communications (EC)
Committee of ASA. The Web Editor will consult with ASA Staff and the
EC on these matters as they evolve.
The ASA Sections are in many ways the heart of our society, and should
play a central role in the professional perspective of Amstat Online. Sections are
encouraged to suggest names for positions on the Editorial Board to the Editor, and may offer
guidance in the activities of those Associate
Editor that pertain to their section missions.
In the past, applied statisticians and statisticians in isolated
locales have found it difficult to build community within ASA. The
web offers hope and opportunity. Acting as individuals or groups,
applied statisticians and isolated statisticians can use Amstat Online to organize, build
research and educational networks, and influence the direction of.
Input for these sources, on directions, nominations for AE positions
and informed guidance on this evolving web, are most welcome.
