Workout: Milwaukee-Madison ride
12:00 - 5:00
dist: ~85 miles
avs: ~18 mph
ave HR: 170's

Comments:
It was a nice day. I wasn't feeling particularly fast or explosive, but
that's fine for a ride like this. I was fighting a stiff northwest wind
early in the ride, but it died down as I got further from Milwaukee.
I ate plenty and drank lots of water. I wasn't all that tired afterward.

Date: 6/14/98 TTB: Slept: Morning HR: Feeling: 7 Performing: 7 Weight: Workout: Madison-Grant Park-Milwaukee ride 10:00 - 7:00 dist: ~135 miles avs: ~16 mph Comments: It was a nice day again. I was fighting a northeast wind the whole way today. I'm actually kind of suprised that I made it! I ate lots and drank lots too. I tried to keep a steady pace around 17-20mph, but didn't wear a HRM to see how hard I was working. I was pretty fatigued afterwards, but not in a bad way, my knees and ankles were a bit sore for awhile afterwards. I think the DairyQueen in Delavan is much better than the DairyQueen by Grant Park. Why do only girls work at DQ's?
Date: 6/15/98 TTB: 2:00 AM Slept: 5.5 hours Morning HR: Feeling: 5.5 Performing: 4.5 Weight: Workout: Weights, then a Short spin w/ Pete & his roommate afternoon: 3 circuits of my favorite exercises at the SERF 8:00 - 9:00 PM dist: 20 miles Rode south, then east, than back. Tried not to work too hard Comments: This ride was actually harder and faster than I wanted it to be. I was still tired from yesterday, so I couldn't go THAT fast, but I had intended for a small-ring spin and got a big ring paceline instead. My legs felt looser afterwards, though, so maybe it was a good thing.
Date: 6/16/98 TTB: Slept: Morning HR: Feeling: 6 Performing: 5 Weight: Workout: Practice crit. 6:30 - 7:30 PM Rode out to the course avs: ~24 mph avHR: 186 BPM Comments: I rode OK. Near the middle of the race I did a hard pull or something and ended up in the back of the pack just before it split in half. The group I was with had some strong people in it and we chased hard for awhile, then when the pack got out of sight we slowed. Several people had dropped off the group also. We ended up getting caught by the 4-man lead break with like 4 laps to go. Colin was in the lead group and I tried leading him out. It was a long leadout to do, especially since I was tired, but he said I did a good job of it and kept the group from bunching up on the final lap. He got 3rd.

Date: 6/18/98 TTB: Slept: Morning HR: Feeling: 7 Performing: 6 Weight: Workout: Wet Paoli ride Rode out to Paoli for the team picture. TT'ed back home in the pouring rain - DOH! Comments: This must have been the wettest I've ever gotten, it was like swimming. I felt fine on the ride down. On the ride back Brent made me feel like the chump I am, but pulled me back into Madison. The first line of black clouds blowing in was a spectacular sight.
Date: 6/19/98 TTB: 12:30AM Slept: 6 hours Morning HR: Feeling: 6.5 Performing: not! Weight: Workout: Rippin' good weekend friday night crit I got dropped on the starting line practically. Ended up riding hard for ~5 minutes. Comments: Before the race I was having some strange stomach pains, but the reason I did so bad was all psychological. I had a relaxed attitude at the start and by the time I realized that a race was going on it was too late. I got to the back of the pack quickly and somewhat deliberately, but the decisive moment came when the rider in front of me (we were the last 2) let a good gap form on the uphill. Somehow I never caught back on. Catching on to a group is a concept I don't have the hang of mentally, it seems - I always slow down just as I'm getting close and if they pull away, I'm stuck. They pulled away today. I made an ok chase, but it was hopeless. It was a very depressing day. I learned some valuable lessons, though.
Date: 6/20/98 TTB: 12:30AM Slept: 7.5 hours Morning HR: Feeling: 7.5 Performing: 7 Weight: Workout: Rippin' good weekend Saturday race 2:00 - 3:00 PM 40min + 5 laps on a short course Rode hard and felt good about it. Comments: I was psyched for the race today. I moved around in the pack, covered some breaks and blocked while Dave was up the road. As usual the finish caught me a little by suprise and I just sat up at the end rather than sprint for 25th place. I was still nervous and taking the corners too slow. The team did great and I had a lot of fun. I was really energized afterwards.
Date: 6/21/98 TTB: Slept: Morning HR: Feeling: Performing: Weight: Workout: Bombay ride ~70 miles some decent hills Comments: A really good time. I felt really good today. Got dropped on all the hills, though.
Date: 6/22/98 TTB: 2:00 AM Slept: 4.5 hours Evening Resting HR: 58 Feeling: 7.5 good but tired Performing: N/A Weight: Workout: none Comments: I intended to lift and go for a short ride today, but it didn't work out, mainly because my commuter bike is broken. I felt good physically, though, and rode to the Crono meeting.
Date: 6/23/98 TTB: 1:00AM Slept: 5.5 hours Morning HR: Feeling: 7.5 very tired Performing: 7.5 decent Weight: 164 lbs Workout: Practice crit. 6:30-7:30 PM dist: 30 miles avs: 26 mph aveHR: 185 BPM Comments: I really went at it today. I attacked several times and moved around in the pack a lot. I wasn't very effective, but it was a good workout. I positioned myself a little at the end and sprinted, probably was in the top 20.
Date: 6/24/98 TTB: 12:00 Slept: 7 hours Morning HR: Feeling: 6 fine Performing: 6 ok Weight: Workout: LSD Ride 5:00 - 8:00 ~65 miles rode to Belleville, New Glarus, Paoli, and back, slowly Comments: I think just Belleville would have been enough. This ride started to get booring after awhile.
Date: 6/25/98 TTB: Slept: Morning HR: Feeling: 6 alright Performing: Weight: Workout: Nothing Comments:
Date: 6/28/98 TTB: 11:00PM Slept: 8 hours Morning HR: Feeling: 7.5 good Performing: 8 good Weight: Workout: BSG Road Race 2:00-6:00 (?) 75 mile road race at the badger ammunition plant, cat 1,2,3. avs: ~23 mph Comments: My goal was to finish this race. There were only 14 starters in the 123's. It was hot, but not too humid. On the 3rd time up the big hill 4 people got away. on the 4th time up, some other 123's and masters and I got away and stayed away. The last other 123 got dropped on the last time up the hill. When I found out that it was only masters left in the group I took off to try and catch up to the 123 leaders, but the masters caught my wheel and attacked me and I rode the rest of the race a little ways behind them. I never saw anyone else behind me, and cruised in for 4th. It took a real effort to hang on to the group the last time up the hill and to follow some of the attacks that came after the hill on the last lap. After the masters dropped me I rode pretty hard, but as it turned out, I didn't need to.
Date: 6/27/98 TTB: 11:00PM Slept: 10 hours Resting HR: 64 BPM Feeling: 6.5 fine Performing: 4 nothing special Weight: 164 lbs Workout: Ride around Lake Kegonsa afternoon 45 miles ave HR: 130 BPM slow ride 50 push ups 50 sit ups Comments: It was a really hot and humid day, and I should have brought more water. Anyhow, my HR was pretty low and unresponsive today. I felt like I was working hard anytime it got into zone 3. I didn't try pushing myself to see how high it would get, though. I felt fine on the ride, just too hot and thirsty towards the end.
Date: 6/28/98 TTB: 11:30PM Slept: 9.5 hours Morning HR: Feeling: 6 good Performing: 6.5 good Weight: 164 lbs Workout: BSG criterium 5:00-6:00 40 laps (27 miles?) avs: 27mph Comments: I had a pretty good race. I felt good in the morning and was in a racing mood for the race. I moved around in the pack just fine and didn't get particularly tired while in the pack. I tried to bridge up to a break with about 10 laps to go (?), and got close, but didn't make it. I ended up being off for ~3 laps this time, though, and stayed at the front of the pack after I was caught. I went pretty hard in the last laps, but sort of messed up my positioning. I sprinted and got 19th.
Date: 6/29/98 TTB: 11:30 Slept: 7.5 hours Resting HR: 59 BPM Feeling: 6.5 good Performing: N/A Weight: 163 lbs Workout: nothing Comments: I really wanted to lift weights today, but the stupid SERF closes too early so I'll have to go tomorrow morning if I'm going to go - darn it!
Date: 6/30/98 TTB: 11:30PM Slept: 7.5 hrs Morning HR: Feeling: 6 Performing: 6.5 Weight: 163 Workout: Weights & Practice crit 9:00-10:00 2 curcuits of my favorite stations at the SERF 6:30-7:30 60 mins + 5 laps avs: ~25? aveHR: 184 BPM Comments: 1st part of the race wasn't very fast, a group got off and noone chased, some blocked. Things sped up, though, and I rode really hard. It wasn't my best day, I was really hurting, but I hung in and sprinted at the end.
Date: 7/1/98 TTB: 11:30 Slept: 7.5 hrs Morning HR: Feeling: 7 Performing: 6.5 Weight: 163 Workout: LSD Ride 5:00-7:30 Rode to Belleville and back Dist: ~40 miles aveHR: ~130 BPM 75 pushups 75 situps Comments: Nice slow ride. We went hard occasionally and for short times because some people were too frisky, but mostly it was recovery. I was feeling good, but only went to Belleville because had to study and the New Glarus ride last week just got boring after awhile. All the hammerheads were going to NewGlarus too.
Date: 7/2/98 TTB: 2:00AM Slept: 5 hrs Morning HR: Feeling: 4.5 Performing: 5 Weight: 160 Workout: Bombay hammerfest 5:30-7:30 Rode around Paoli or something ~40 miles avs: 22mph aveHR: ~165 75 pushups 75 situps Comments: I came home and took a nap after class, I was too tired. I went out looking for the spring ride, but it wasn't there, so I joined the hammerfest. We did a lot of pacelining. I almost always stayed in the saddle on the hills. Towards the end I had that burnt-out no-juice feeling in my legs, but after the ride I felt prety good. I don't think it was very good training, however. i need to just go off by myself next time this happens. I was in a sort of hurry to get done, though, because I had an exam the next morning.
Date: 7/3/98 TTB: 12:00 Slept: 7 hrs Morning HR: Feeling: 7 Performing: -- Weight: 163 Workout: nothing really Comments: Took a biology exam in the morning. Worked a long day and didn't eat much. It was raining whenever I was outside, so I didn't think much about riding.
